Orange have they done wrong?

Basically yes, would you continue to pay money for something that doesn't work properly and the company will do nothing about it?
You are making the mistake that many people make. You signed an air-time contract with Orange for 18/24 months. They do not guarantee a signal everywhere and the handset that you got - probably free - is simply an inducement to take out the air time contract. But people thing "I am getting a new handset", not that they are tying themselves into an air-time contract.
If the phone has problems during the first 12 months, then they must put it right, unless the fault is caused by damage done by you.
However hard you feel done by, the advice you are being given is the right advice - check on numerous other threads like this one.
Whether or not they take you to court, we can't say. But you should take advantage of "the Credit Expert" from Experian and get a free check on your credit record to see just how badly you have been rated as a result of just walking away from your legal obligations.0 -

I was aware that signal is never going to be perfect especially considering some remote locations I go to. But I was miffed to say the least that a member of my family on Orange with a PAYG phone bought for £20 gets full signal whilst I got nothing at home and the other also on Orange contract got a gleaming signal to. Home being a large town not in a remote Scottish/Welsh valley where you may expect a bad signal.0 -

Each post is making oy worse for you! You now admit that it isn't the signal that is the main problem as other Orange handsets get a signal, it is your handset.
So why did you stop paying for a service that other family members demonstrated worked? You should have got the handset sorted out under warranty.
But that is in the past and you are in the doggy-doo. So, you have to take it from where you now are. Your Original question "Orange - have they done wrong?" The answer is no - you did. You have a large debt that they can legally try to recover and a bad credit rating due to your own actions in 2009.
Knowing that, it's now up to you how you mitigate the damage but at least you have advice/opinions that are firmly on the side that Orange are in the right.0 -
Different handsets pick up very different levels of signal and in my experience a cheapo £20 Nokia will hold signal better than a whizz-bang smartphone. Had you phoned Orange about your phone switching off/freezing/exploding etc they would have replaced it no question0

Best get this sorted before they sell your debt to debt collectors really. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0

The iphone is horrendous for signal, it's well known for it, the 3GS especially, Apple tried to remedy this with the iphone 4 and we all know how that turned out0

Actually not true, my iPhone (both my old 3GS and my 4) have a better signal than my HTC Desire.
I could not actually replicate the hand grip loss of signal on my 4 when I tried, and as I normally use a protective case (someone at Apple thought it would be a clever idea to make the back out of glass) to protect the phone, wouldn't have found it an issue even if it was a problem.====0
