To mac or not to mac

Anyone who buys a pc primarily for gaming is wasting their money, and would get much better value from a console.
I could quiet easily use that argument to say a PC is better value than a mac, could I not???The pcs 'flexibility' in it's range of differently sourced software and differing hardware standards is also it's Achilles heel; it is inherently a compromise.
If I was to agree with you I'd have to say the bigger compromise is being controlled by one manufacter. I feel sorry for mac users especially when the new app store for macs comes into being.I am afraid a thread that started off with the OP wanting to know why he should buy a mac over a PC or vice versa has provided lots of people stating that PCs are better as macs are overpriced in comparison.
And people stating PCs are overpriced in comparison to consoles:rotfl:. Make up your mind! The argument put forward that if you spend enough money AND know what your doing with a PC will make it a better gaming machine are accepted, but tend to destroy the argument then that Macs are overpriced.
If you want to game on your PC you know you'll need to put in the work and the money, you have a reason. With apple you put in the money for a brand, no other reason. My considered opinion is that if you want to play games you choose whether to spend shed loads of cash AND know what youre doing with a PC (and then admittedly have the flexibility of having the PC for net/office work too) OR if you are less knowledgeable buy a cheaper PC and a dedicated games platform console and have the flexibility of both and the ability that two users may use them seperately.
Also on the value for money front a gaming PC will last longer than a console due to its upgradability (yes I made that word up but you get the idea).I rarely play games at all so I decided after years of frustration with PCs I'd go along the mac route, I don't get the software mismatch issues and the machine works flawlessly very time, even the ancient emac I have in my home office.
I have no software issues on any of my PCs and all work flawlessly.Ocassionally I find something I'd like to do on a mac that only a PC can do but that moment passes......
Whereas I never find anything I'd like to do on a mac that can't be done on a PC.0 -
This thread reminds me of the old "My Spectrum is better than your CBM64" arguments we had at school.

The OP asked why they should spend their hard earned on a Mac, not why they should stay with windows PCs.
So I don't get all the windows fanboi comments. It's got nothing to do with windows.
It's the OP's money. Let him/her spend it as they wish. Try a Mac by all means; if it's not to their liking they can go back to a PC.0 -
I'm a designer working on a Mac and our IT unit are pressing for me to change to PC.
I lurve Macs and would never want to change because the operating system is smooth and doesn't try and do everything for you. New Windows OS just seem to copy the best bits of MacOS then make more 'clever' (read annoying). Also i don't get alerts every five minutes telling me to do this or that, update this etc. I've been working on my iMac for 5 years trouble free - my advice - PCs are for poor chumps so if you can afford a Mac - go for it. Fast, smooth, sexy and waaaay cooler than a giant toaster under yer desk!0 -
I've had to use pcs for work but have had macs at home, so much easier and intuitive. I always seem to be able to accomplish tasks more quickly on a mac and with better results so now use my own mac book for work and the pc laptop sits gathering dust. They do look good too but I loved them even before they got design makeovers. I very much doubt that hyou would want to sell it if you bought one but they do hold their price well.0

Hi there
My son persuaded me to get him a Mac laptop when he went to Uni to study Media Studies. I was amazed how much extra they cost compared to a PC but I went along with it especially after seeing his college tutor's desktop Mac. He still has it 5 years later and, apart from the odd few scratches, it is still functioning perfectly well. I was so impressed with his iPhoto library that I decided to buy an iMac too. I couldn't justify the cost of a new one so I shopped around on eBay and picked up an excellent year-old one at just a little over half the retail price of a new one. I have been very impressed with it and it is still in immaculate condition after four years of daily use and contains a photo library of 20,000 images. From my experience, there are two obvious benefits. Firstly, reliability - they rarely pick up viruses. Secondly, they hold their value extremely well and, usually, first owners look after their Macs so you will get a good deal buying pre-owned. I've now bought a Macbook as I'm away from home a lot and I love it. One suggestion I would make to help with the transition from Windows to OSX op system is to invest in a book 'Switching to the Mac' - it proved invaluable to me in the early days. One final point, if you have lots of images the iPhoto program is so easy to use and is vastly superior to anything Windows has to offer. Hope this helps to convince you.0 -

A lot of people that have a PC have never used a Mac, yet they claim Macs are overpriced and just as good as a PC, which is clearly untrue or this debate wouldn't keep cropping up. This debate comes up all the time because Mac is a lot more expensive than Windows and Mac users want to rightfully justify the price, where as a lot of PC users are ignorant to the fact that quality is going to cost you a bit more money which is the reason Macs are more expensive. If I remember rightly Macs annual revenue overtook Microsoft's not so long ago. This day in age most people are growing up with computers and are computer literate from a very young age. I find it very interesting that with this correlation of Macintosh overtaking Microsoft on the computer market seem to be happening at the same time as computers are beginning to become a vital part of everyday life with most youngsters.0
