For what its worth, if your just using a Laptop to browse the web and use the odd spreadsheet and write a few letters I would stick with Microsoft. However if your using it for anything to do with music, photography, film etc I would go Mac.

I'd suggest looking at what software you want to use and then selecting an appropriate platform to run it on based on your own individual requirements.

Mac's reputation for being the best for creative purposes are pretty inaccurate now, being based on old anecdotal beliefs.

certainly the mac is more expensive but it's also better made, has far, far superior software AND the majority of the software you will run on a day to day basis is made by apple, hence no conflict problems or poor programming.
I got fed up with pcs crashing due to poorly written software and virus infections, I now have a macbook and an old (but good) emac desktop.
If in doubt: get something a few years old from ebay:
G4 minimum processor with at least 512mb ram (and a slot free or upgradeable), try to aim for an intel cpu if possible as that will allow you to run 'bootcamp' which allows you to run Windows or OSX on it.
It's a learning curve to get used to OSX, but it does make Windows look poor in comparison.
All my opinion only of course.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.

So...is that like vegan sausages...all the great sausage taste, none of the nasty meaty goodness?

Luckily MS allow their operating system to run on a variety of hardware, including macs (as they are just pretty PCs) so this is possible. Sadly an awful lot of work is involved in making an OS that will run reliably on millions of different hardware configurations, Apple make life easy on themselves by limiting it to a handful, while microsoft get flack for the tiny percentage with problems.

It's very, very rare that I see mentioned anywhere "I have a PC and want to run mac software on it", but he reverse is commonplace...I wonder why?

To the OP I say... buy one, give it a good try, if you find you don't like it then you can always sell it on. People here suggest the loss won't be that bad.

I got a 15" MacBook Pro for my birthday and I'm loving it.. we are looking to upgrade our home PC to Mac :)
    Target Save £1k :o
    So far £625/£1000 :j
  • I have several PCs... but still hanker after a mac.

PC World has some good deals on refurbished kit, saving hundreds.
  • I used to be a PC man and swore by them. I took the plump twelve months ago when they launched the 27" iMAC - expensive yes but the software is flawless as is the customer support and warranty. I will never go back to a PC and that unforgiving blue screen of death!!!

Go on plump for one - especially as Black Friday is coming up - theres bound to be some great savings!

OP has already made decision to buy and just needs reasons he can convince himself and get rid of any guilt.

Here are some reasons from me:
    • good looks
    • a very good OS
    • comes with commonly used SW preloaded
    • you will love iPhoto and lot
    • not yet a target of virus writers. Even otherwise Sophos(a company that provides antivirus solutions for enterprises) has come up with a free anti-virus for Mac
    • switch it on and off just like a TV. You don't need to shut down, it consumes very minimal energy on stand-by
    • I love its parental control features. Child accounts can be time limited and much more.
    • to add new iMacs come with magic mouse and trendy keyboard

tell me if it still doesn't satisfy your conscience, I can list some more. :p
