Ok, yes windows and an imac is a PC too if you want to be specific!

Linux doesn't have a lack of programs as such, more a lack of mainstream programs which enable me to work like Photoshop or lightroom.

Fair enough you can run stuff in WINE, but it can be too buggy with the latest release of software.

I still use Linux as an OS for my server however!
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!
  • The idea behinds Macs is to have a computer that works flawlessly straight out of the box, minimum hassle. Mac hardware and OSX are designed specifically for each other, to work together seamlessly.

Windows is designed to work on millions of different hardware configurations, which is quite often where the problem lies, especially with drivers etc.

If you want something that will let you get on with your work or entertainment without any fuss, get a Mac.

If you don't mind a bit of tinkering and want to save some money, get a Windows PC.
  • The great thing about open systems is that they can be massively cheaper for organisations that have to pay licence fees to Microsoft?

Obviously if you are a student who has been forced to use Linux, when you graduate you will be a Linux fan etc. (as well as having learned something about computers along the way).

It is a bit like debating the merits of Firefox over Internet Explorer.

Not really. Support contracts still cost big money, especially if you go with Red Hat (which most sane businesses would)

I don't even think that Firefox vs IE even needs to be debated!! IE is quite possibly one of the worst browsers known to man :wall:

I also agree that companies could save a lot of money by using open systems, but it will take decades for companies to actually make the move, except for a few that already have of course, such as the US Military I have heard.
  • I had to use IE the other day and I was amazed at how it had been improved in the last couple of years - nothing like a bit of competition!
  • Competition is good, but more worthy contenders for Firefox are Opera, Chrome and Safari!
  • A lot of you are going to have to take a big piece of humble pie when IE9 is fully released.

why? I use greasemonky and firbeug daily..not sure either is gonna be compatible with ie9 :)

I do hear it's shaping up to be a decent browser, but it's going to take a lot to migrate me from firefox, even chrome which has many advantages hasn't managed (safari and opera aren't even contenders!)
