I think the new University debt is Debt like mtg debt at over 6%.
And I don't hear anyone here saying NOT to pay off mtg debt over savings at that rate?0 -

Yes and no, it is a high rate but as others have pointed out, it could be written off so depends on individual circumstances.
Also many people won't be able to pay it off so that's a bit academic. Part of the problem is this is being debated by a load of middle aged people, and people's views do change, if you are younger your views will be different. Given the current fees then I probably wouldn't have gone to what is supposedly the sixth best university in the world, and this is a moneysaving site after all.
I understand te big accounta cy firms are now back to offering 18 year olds training places, and from a cost to benefit perspective this would be a sensible option, no doubt competitive to apply for, but not beyond those who are going to a decent university.
We have recently employed a young woman, degree from Cambridge, masters from St. Andrews, and we wouldn't have been paying her much over twenty grand, as she chose to be an ecologist and that is a lifestyle choice. Given her chosen career path then the current system would sensibly argue against payment but it will vary.0 -
Yes, one of mine is on such a training scheme/employment with a Major earning very well already, and one 18 yr old in his younger bros class took up a position instead of going to University. He had As in maths, physics and chemistry- I thought he would do something like engineering but didn't know him well enough to inquire.
they start off at a lower salary than graduates (but over 20K I think?) and do their exams a bit more slowly after the first few.
If you have been hired by one of these firms before you get your final results, the position is based on you getting a 2.1 or better. One of his colleagues got a 2.2 so was bumped down to the lower tier that the 18 yr olds join at. Think she can get back if she does well in her exams.
They work them hard though, 2 weeks auditing here, 2 weeks there, then off to do their exams for 3 weeks then back to the office.0 -

Well, today is my first day of "freedom", assuming weekends don't really count!
Bought the cakes and beers and said "Goodbye" last week, but still find myself sitting in front of MSE. I really must go and sit in the garden...0 -
Is your OH retired?
How late did you sleep in?0 -
Yes, OH is retired. Slept until the cat woke us at 7am as usual, let him out and went back to bed!0

Congratulations HappySeagull that is truly fantastic
I look forward to many more coming forward with the same result during the next few years of this thread ::)0 -
Congrats on getting back to bed- once I am up that is it lol. Be it 4:30-5 am with the dawn chorus, or at 7:30 for the dog.
Make sure, if your OH retired first to get out from under for a bit lol. Maybe go out to a pub for lunch (cheaper than going out for dinner so more retirement friendly) and celebrate.0 -

Just wacked my state retirement age into that. Only 15343 days to go!0
