No sense of humour those tax people.;)

'Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs', I thought.

Then reality kicked in. Just over six months gives an awful lot of wriggle room on both sides.

Not that I'm cynical, you understand... :rotfl:

Sorry, but I own a house in france.

So if LePen wins I will be with you at the Bar lol.

    Me too!

We own a (very small) property in France, purchased when OH had to work over in Paris for several years a while back.

The property isn't rented out and property prices have stagnated for years, with only a very recent minor uptick.

We were planning on selling up in 2018 when OH retires, in order to minimise CGT (not to mention the dreaded social charges), but Brexit /LePen/plunge in pound have made us question whether we should get out sooner rather than later.

    Any thoughts?

    Well....here's some news for you.

Six years, one month and one day after starting this thread.....I quit.

A couple of things happened over the last month at work that really pi55ed me off so.....i wrote the letter. I sat on it for 10 days and tweaked it every day of those ten days.

During those 10 days we've also been running through our stash (€2.1 million in investments +€1 million in deferred tax accounts + pensions) as well as our budget (€35,000 'basics' + €30,000 'fun' money) and it all seems to stack up.

Finally I reached that point where the reasons to go exceeded the reasons to stay.

My contractual leaving date is 30 June 2017 ....

    Press reset!

    Well congrats!

And leaving in June is perfect- just in time for the summer. Do your europe travelling like I do in July to avoid the August traffic. Hit up the UK in August maybe?

My thoughts are I am right with you. It was a family holiday place (a tiny gite in Brittany) and only 1 of the boys likes to go there still. And I do have an offer fro a neighbor to buy it (but another neighbor HATES the idea of them owning it lol) but the GBP i'd get for it has dropped so I am not in a hurry.

It does sort of tie us to NW france though, and if we sold it we could maybe go other places in france/europe although this past year we did spend 2 days in Beaujolais.

Well done ML. I quit last month too after humming and arring for at least two years. It's bl006y marvelous.
I don't quite have your fortune, but mine is wayyyyy more than I'll ever spend, so what the heck.
To all who are looking at reasons to retire early, I recommend you satrt looking for excuses to keep working. Once you dismiss those ( including the financials) it really is a no-brainer. JFDI

But ML. What's with that far away contractual leaving date???
Are they giving you six months gardening leave or are they locking you in till then? What sort of career has a seven month notice period? Monarch?

Or has someone else said: Has your account been hacked? Or are you posting while intoxicated?

Congratulations ML! Although I too won't really believe it until July comes along.:rotfl:
(And to head off any possible arguments come July, going back as a contractor does not count as retired!)
  • Well done ML :) Enjoy!

    Hung up my suit!
So let me give you my assurance ....its really me. Although if my account had been hacked how would you know that ;-) but it is.

The six month notice period is (on their side) to protect their key account transition program, so you don't just !!!!!! off and leave clients hanging. On the other side they get to put people on gardening leave and stop them working for another employer. As an aside it seems like the people who get made redundant or who leave to join someone else get a much better deal that those who leave voluntarily. But hey ho.

These last couple of weeks / months have been tough as I've become less and less interested in work. I did some research on "burn out" and it seems like I hit somewhere between 6-7 of the key measures but the key thing that has always kept me going is my BH never wanted me to give up. Now she does and that means work and life are no longer in balance. In addition, I also feel that personal pride makes me want to leave as I don't want to be known as someone who dropped his standards and I really feel my motivation to work evening and weekends has gone.

However, its not all negative reasons.

Ski season has started :-) and I now want to have some me time (or "us" time) for a year or so while I figure out what i want to do with the rest of my life. I still see myself as wanting to be productive and that may be in training, blogging or something else but I'm going to give myself some time to figure that out.

First step on the journey is a Caribbean cruise in January ....then we'll see what happens.
Money won't buy you happiness....but I have never been in a situation where more money made things worse!
