I want to add that when you are retired are you looking for a calm life or some excitement?
If you want excitement then invest in a BTL.
If you want a VERY calm life then buy an annuity.
Most of us are looking for a life in-between.
In my opinion it is all about a mixed investment.
Remember retirement is about wealth retention NOT about wealth building.
I have been retired for over 20 years and my choices reflected the above.
SO I have missed some exciting wealth building opportunity's BUT I have slept very calmly (about money) for over 7300 NIGHTS!
SO I just want to remind you that you may have spent many, many years building your "pot" when you are retired is NOT the time to increase it.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

I'm considering divorcing the wife for pension balancing reasons and getting a job as a nightclub bouncer to give me more opportunities to punch Brexit voters.

Where does this sit on the calm scale?
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

    Stress management lol.

Pity me, I had to live thru Brexit twice. I flew home to vote against the Donald and lost.

It was like the 24th all over again.

And now I have to live with the indignity of a president elect who has Tweet diarrhea.

    I find drinking helps.

    Well....here's some news for you.

Six years, one month and one day after starting this thread.....I quit.

A couple of things happened over the last month at work that really pi55ed me off so.....i wrote the letter. I sat on it for 10 days and tweaked it every day of those ten days.

During those 10 days we've also been running through our stash (€2.1 million in investments +€1 million in deferred tax accounts + pensions) as well as our budget (€35,000 'basics' + €30,000 'fun' money) and it all seems to stack up.

Finally I reached that point where the reasons to go exceeded the reasons to stay.

My contractual leaving date is 30 June 2017 ....

    Press reset!
Money won't buy you happiness....but I have never been in a situation where more money made things worse!

I looked into the pension advantages of a temporary divorce for lifetime limit purposes but apparently the revenue take a dim view....
    I think....

Well done - I love it when a plan comes together.

Are you going to be angling for gardening leave ??
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine

Congratulations on part 1. Part 2 is in June. :)

That might actually be what causes me to go sometime since otherwise the work is good.

At 47 years worth of that assuming no investment growth other than inflation that seems easy enough.

Assuming you do make investments your challenge will be spending more than you're gaining. Assuming an average return of only 8% in P2P I'd expect to be able to cover your whole income need with just 800k, excluding inflation cover.
