Early-retirement wannabe

Im 44 and my company pension allows me to retire from age 50, but if I wait until I'm 55 I get a much better pension.
I took on a larger mortgage a in 2007 when I bought a much nicer/bigger house and by over paying it each month it should be paid off when I'm 52. So I shall probably wait until I'm 55 before I retire. I can't wait!
Because retirement has been in my mind for quite a few years, I'm just starting a pension for my 9yr old son, to give him a fighting chance of an early retirement.0 -
I am also incandescent with rage about candescent lights
Laws that helped drive down the cost of LED lighting meaning we now have long-lasting, high-quality and low energy lights.
Don't get me wrong, I've moaned about the regulations at times as hitting the standby figures for consumer electronics was a pain in the backside, but the end result is better for everyone, and this kind of thing can only be done in a centralised and coordinated way.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -

Well, as you have decided to split hairs .....:p....... the bulbs that were supposed to replace them weren't as bright as they claimed, so you had to buy higher wattage ones, didn't you. And you had to wait a while whilst they gradually got brighter. And they are a packet to buy aren't they.
And as it turns out none of them last as long as they claim.
Apart from that I agree with you, centralised control is a really wonderful thing.

The lights save enough money to be a good deal in spite of the cost, particularly for largely nocturnal people like me. May take some extra light fittings to get the same total illumination, though.
Still, it didn't require EU legislation to get it done, the individual countries could have done it instead with national laws.0 -
I'm worst than nocturnal. I only need three hours or so sleep ...

Have you forgotten how you voted in 2011. Or did you not bother.
Only 42% turnout.

First of all these exp bulbs foisted upon us could be good- if they lasted a long time. Which they dont (not even twice an incandescent in my experience). Add in the lack of decent 60-100w equivs, and the lack of good frosted candle shaped (to fit the 10+ light fixtures I have that take them ) and it is bulb nightmare.
If they made bulbs to go with the lighting fixtures for sale prev, and they lasted as long as advertised, and they didnt cause problems in disposal (they are worse for the environment than incandescent which negates th energy savings) they'd be a fine idea.
But once again, lets go off half cocked and impose laws and not have the reliable easy to get items required?0 -
