At the moment, only 3888 day's to go until I retire and 3267 day's until the mortgage is paid off.
I love reading this thread but I am trying not to contribute to it until I am within 1 year of retirement.(apart from now, of course) There are so many inspiring comments on here, I just read and dream.
The 3888 figure is the worst case scenario, I am hoping that if things change,I can knock off a couple of years earlier. Until then, I have plenty of time to work out what to do once retired.

If you're happy to die still in harness and with your savings unspent ...

The problem is that the only way to avoid taking it with you is to know exactly when you're going to go. It's inevitable that a prudent man will have a few quid pugged away for a rainy day when he finally meets his maker.

I'm hoping to give up full time work at 60 and try for a phased transition from working 45 weeks of the year at 60 to zero weeks at 65. The way I look at it is if I work for 40ish weeks next year it will pay to upgrade my holiday flights to business class for the rest of my life.

My number probably just increased. Some nice golden handcuffs are being dangled in front of me, and I'd be crazy to refuse as it will nicely derisk a lot of things. However, it does make it likely that I'll bump my head on LTA.
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.

Well that is good news for you, LTA notwithstanding.

As an aside, the term Golden handcuffs was the answer to a pub quiz and my 2x 20 somethings were disgusted I knew it and they didnt lol. Old people knowledge apparently.

You're already very well qualified to comment since this is about aspiring to retire early and that takes lots of advance planning in most cases.

Was talking to a good friend who I haven't heard from for a while at the weekend. Left the NHS at 55 with a good pension. Did voluntary service overseas. Did a wish list of things as well. Now suffering from severe depression. Not everyone adjusts well from full time employment to zero. Wishes now that she had taken the part time route. Lot to be said for keeping your mind active.

Sometimes it seems people place plenty of emphasis on how to fund retirement but not nearly enough planning on how to spend the new free time.

Yes, and then they get cold feet, because all that free time seems scary
