    I take your points. :)

Hey, it's like talking to a mirror.

EDF have a 2015 product so they can use their intuition to set a fix over a decent term.I agree they will factor in a safety margin.

Again, we did the same cashflow breakdown on that tariff.

There have been decent deals in the past. You seem content with yours and I used one a couple of years ago, which was advantageous for a while.

    Concur.

The point I was making is that they currently don't seem at all competitive or even fair. Due to people's fears, it is easy to fall for the wording without realising the consequences. Indeed they currently look set to fleece the unsuspecting.

There's an old Chinese saying: "Fleece comes from the sheep", which means, however you justify it, the sheep WILL get fleeced.

The only choice you get is skin head or crew cut. :)

Oh Dear, oh dear, oh dear. I've just got involved with thinking about switching and decided to research the subject by looking and comparing comparison sites and gripes on these forums.

My god, how on earth did we get led into this maze of smoke, mirrors and trickery?

Is anyone aware of any organisation that intends getting this whole joke under control?

The prices are surely higher because a whole new industry has been established to profit from our switching, and because reps are being paid to scour the forums and throw in a few tidbits to keep the punters happy and even more confused.

Another company can supply me with the same gas as my original supplier but at a cheaper rate yet my original supplier said he paid more for the gas so how can the new supplier sell it for less?

If it's the same gas surely the difference can only come about because of the billing system which computers do anyway for next to nothing.

It's all the phone centres and people answering the queries that costs all the money.

Where the hell is OFGEM in all this (another bunch of well meaning but it would seem totally ineffective officials)?

We've got to do something people this is a complete Balls Up and we are stupic enough to swallow it hook line and sinker and pay for it all.

    Heaven help us.

A simpler system would save money all round. What the hell's going on?

Where's Gordon Brown when we need him? Don't answer that.

EBICO? Are you confusing me with someone else? I did dip my toe into switching but found the whole scenario so mind-numbingly tedious and time-consuming, I took the easy way out and sat on the side-line.

Spend a lot of time in here do you?

I've switched suppliers a few times and indeed have just switched tariffs with Eon when I really should have looked at switching providers again as I may have been able to save a little but I digress...

I understand your frustration at having a myriad of deals from many providers to consider, it is a pain having to work out who offers the best deal for your particular circumstances and I also understand your feelings towards the 'free' comparison sites, nobody does something for nothing.

I too would like something simple in an ideal world but on the flipside of the coin in years gone by nobody had an option on who they bought their energy from and at what rate they paid for that energy, it was a 1 size fits all and pretty much a monopoly for the local gas and electricity board that supplied your utilities.

Whilst I understand your frustration with all of the complexities of choosing providers and plans now I personally will live with it knowing that at least there is some competition out there and with a little bit of homework I can save £££'s every year. Can you imagine what it would be like if like years gone by we were still shackled to our local energy suppliers (gas and electricity as seperate entities too!)?

Granted it's not simple but with only a modest amount of effort there are huge savings to be had, something that wouldn't be possible in the not so distant past! I suggest you try a couple of comparison sites, punch in the details they require and save some money! It's not rocket science.

Exactly, the comparison sites are having a field day. Where do you think the commission they earn comes from?.......your energy bill.

Add up all the energy company call centre employees, the sales teams and the reps etc etc all trying to sort out consummers queries and you have another huge loading on your bill.

It would be interesting to know how much we pay for the actual energy and how much we pay for the incidental services that have been created around it.

It seems the easy way out to follow the crowd and just take whatever little tidbit is available here and there, but isn't that just feeding the industry? We shouldn't just sit back and accept this, it is plainly wrong.

I do miss the old nationalised industries.
British Gas had good engineers, the boiler insurance was great.
All off the back of North Sea oil, alas.

Don't we own Iceland because of the ISA deposits?
Make them lease us a part of Iceland in exchange for the debt they owe us, tunnel into the Arctic Circle, and grab some oil.
