  • Hi. I have just got an email to say I have been accepted!!

So from what I gather the next step is to send the contract off and then I will have to do another 30 test questions before they decide finally whether to give me a job?

Can someone just confirm that's correct please.

    Thanks.
  • Hi guys. My induction with my SR is on Monday at 7.30pm, I can't wait!!!!

Quick question for those who are fully feldged?! I have set up seperate bank account for my payment etc to make it easier for tax, and I have the Self Employed Form, and well as the low income form (to pay lower NI). However, as you only do self assesment once a year, how do you know how much to set aside for the tax man every month?

Also, what happens for things like your pc, heating, lighting, broadband etc - can you claim a % of tax back on this as you use them for your employment?

    Thanks!

Good luck with the induction! I set aside roughly a third of my income when I get paid and put it into a separate savings account. I haven't done my first self-assessment yet but I think this should be more than enough so I'll have a little lump sum at the end of the year. With regards to the heating, broadband etc, I don't bother claiming that back. I'd imagine its fairly complicated and also difficult to prove what is for work use and what is for personal use. Don't know if anyone else has any thoughts on this?

First of all you'll be sent some policy documents to read through, and also the downloads you'll need. You'll then set up a time with your senior researcher to do the induction over instant messenger. Once that's done you'll be able to do your first 30 questions which will be checked by your SR, then, if you do ok, you'll be free to go.

You don't have to pay any income tax at all on the first £5,035 you earn (this year's figures). After that, you pay 10% on the next £2,150 and 22% on the next slice (then 40% of course) - look here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm. When you are working it out, add your AQA earnings to earnings from your regular employment. And of course you pay a bit more in NI when you go over the £5,035 lower profits limit (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/nic.htm). So how much you put aside depends on how much you expect to earn.

If you have a look on the cutting tax board, there are loads of threads on what expenses you can put against your self-employment.
