And what are the company going to do for the next X months while you are off? Speak to your doc, explain the situation to the GP. There's probably some medical reason not to go.

I would ASK not to go, explain you are concerned etc - I had problems during my pregnancy but had to travel abroad when my grandparents passed close together - I managed to complete the last trip just before the doctors letter stage though... think I was 25 or 26 weeks when I went to my grandfathers funeral. My problem wasn't the flight, the other people got told to get out of my way in no uncertain terms!(I am not a shy person though) and the airlines I ended up flying with were all great considering :)
Work - well it depends on how you want the rest of you work time to go with them, if you think you'll go back at some point OR if you think you're likely to bump into someone in another company later - IT is often a very small world and any issues might get remembered when others move and if they come across you again...
Unless you GP is unhappy with you flying then I would advise you to seriously think about doing it.

I took an overnight train for a work event when I was 29 weeks pregnant. The quality of my work suffered because I was exhausted from the travel, and although the baby and I were perfectly healthy it was stressful because I was worried and having to take a 15-hour train instead of a 1.5 hour flight was tedious and frustrating.

If this is not a job you need to come back to, I would ask your doctor to write you an exemption and when you give it to your company be apologetic and proactive in offering alternatives.

  • I wouldn't do this to please work, you are just a number to them at the end of the day. If you and your oh don't feel comfortable with this then don't do it.

I travelled to Europe at 33 weeks pregnant and it wasn't a problem, I felt perfectly happy and healthy but then it was for a holiday and not work! The worst part of it was QUEUEING FOR HOURS at the Ryanair Check in desk and NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON offered me their seat.

I'm little concerned here. Are you going next week to Netherlands without a Risk Assessment having been done? Are they only just doing it now after paying for your fare and making the arrangements?

I would have thought for them to have provided you with adequate insurance for this trip the risk assessment would have had to be carried out before now. Have you seen the insurance they have for you, is it suitable?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

They hadnt considered the risk for the Netherlands trip either, but I thought that I should ask about this trip just in case and the the 30 week trip because i was starting to get concerned. I had suggested the ferry as an alternative to the plane on this occasion because I felt it would be less stressful and difficult. I had said that felt comfrtable enough to travel via the ferry for this trip so i presume my manager thought that would be ok.
Having spoken to HR today they have said that I am NOT to travel at 30 weeks. I wonder if it should have been my responsibility to ask all these questions in the first place. I think because my manager is based in the Netherlands then things like this get overlooked. I am grateful for everyones response and i hope if any other women in a similar position can take some advice here too.
