I've lived in godalming, guildford, milford, woking and farnham. There is one sec. school in milford and at least one in godalming (definately used to be in farncombe).
I would recommend godalming for some people, good links etc but is expensive and its very close to guildford (which means most shops are drawn to guildford and the godalming centre is a little dead) Guildford is a nice town in the day (at night in areas it's full of drunk and snotty teenagers).
Thats the only problem with this area in general, very stock broker/bbc media belt and full of wealthy people who are generally quite arrogant, though of course that is a broad generalisation. It has not always been the case - so it really depends on how (wealthy you are and how) you want your children to turn out :)
If you want a nice town that is a little more independent then Farnham is probably the way to go. Out of the above it is my favorite but commuting to london takes a little longer on this line. Woking is nice too, but is fast becoming a ghost commuter town in the day - i was speaking to a guy who runs a few businesses there the other day and he's selling and closing some down in the town centre because a large majority of the office space has been converted into flats and trade in the day is going down hill quickly.

Have quite a few friends in the area so visit regularly. Prices are high though & I don't consider to be particularly good value for money. Guildford was not particularly nice to visit at night, as someone else mentioned the town centre appears to be a magnet for drunk teenagers. Our car was also scratched all along one side by a key or something similar! Lots of pretty villages around there. Several friends have gone as far as Hampshire in search of space & value for money. Aldershot has a bit of bad reputation locally so prices are cheaper, but a couple of friends lived there very happily for several years.

    In case anyone is interested.......

We did a 2 day visit to Surrey (Guildford, Camberley, Milford, Godalming, Farnham) and Reading (Earley, Woodley) and have now made our final decision which is

    (drum roll pls):rotfl:

    FARNHAM:j

We found it to be a lovely place with lovely people to boot! Guildford was lovely as well. Loads of character but we didn't feel a sense of community there. Godalming was a strong contender but as pointed out by someone on this thread, the town felt a little 'dead'

Anyway, thanks everyone for your views.

Farnham must be far and away the most expensive place on this list.
  • I live in Weybridge which is nice. Don't think you'd get 3 bed for 800 there tho. Farnham is nice and don't think you will go far wrong there..

On rightmove looking at rental properties, Farnham is in the same range as Guildford, Godalming, Woodley and Earley.

But even if it was more expensive I think we'll be willing to make a few sacrifices. The feel we got was lovely. People were helpful and polite (we purposely asked people for directions) and the schools are good.

Looking at 2beds now. 3beds is something we might need to drop.

  • I lived in Farnham for 20 years and moved away a few years ago. Yes it is pretty but choked with traffic, the town centre has some of the highest levels of pollution around.

I much prefer Somerset although it breaks my heart when I think how much the house we sold is probably worth now!

Yes. We noticed the traffic going through the town as well. Oh well. Nothing is ever perfect is it? We justified to ourselves that we'll only be going into the town centre once or twice a week. If we really want to shop we'll probably head to Guildford.
