Surrey - Views Pls

Hello

Don't know if any of you will remember me. I was here before asking for your advice on nice areas around London.

Anyway, I've now decided on Surrey and have in particular got my eye on Guildfore, Godalming and Milford. I've looked at the crime rates and school ratings on upmystreet and I've looked at rightmove to confirm that our budget of 800pds will rent us a 2bed flat/hse.

Any advice on what else I should look at? It's a long long drive from where I am currently living so I want to make sure I'm pretty confident about the place before I decide to drive up there for a visit.

Also, any views on these places? Any of you live there now?

Oh, one more thing. I can't find any schools in Milford. Does this mean that kids here go to schools in Godalming?

Thanks again for your help guys!:T

PS: Toddler will only be 2 in Dec. This means he'll only start school in Sept 09. Do you think it's too early to be planning to live in a good school catchment area? Should we save a few pennies and rent cheaper elsewhere for a couple of years first? If, yes, WHERE???????

I live in Surrey (Thames Ditton) and have only passed through the areas you've mentioned, so cant comment on schools etc, but I would have no problems with living out that way :D
  • Can't provide details about schools but as JennyW says you can't go far wrong with the places you mention as they are desirable. Guildford is obviously the largest and has everything you would need in terms of shops, entertainment and schools. Personally I would rather live in Godalming as it retains some character aswell as good lifestyle options and with easy access to the larger Guildford if you did require anything extra.

good answer. You could live on the outskirts then commute into Guildford for shopping! Worplesdon and Burpham are also nice areas around Guildford

OK. After all that research DH has now decided that he'll like 3beds instead of 2 so that he can use one as a study. That's all fine except our budget remains at 800pounds :rolleyes2 There is totally a big fat zero properties that meet this criteria in the places that I mentioned before.

JennyW and Griffin78 (or anyone else who know's Surrey), are you able to recommened any other places in Surrey that are cheaper? Or is Surrey out of our league?

3 bed place in a NICE part of Surrey all for £800, you may well be struggling!

I work in Tongham (in between Aldershot & Guildford) and is an ok area, but unsure of prices.

Leatherhead/Epsom/Ewell are also nice areas, but again can be pricey.

I'm searching in rightmove. Instead of putting 800pounds as my maximum PCM I put 900pounds, what are my chances of being able to rent the place for 800pounds? Some places are advertised for 875 or 850.

you can only ask :), if you were buying you would try and haggle wouldn't you?

if it's a long term thing and you're a good tenant don't see why they would knock you back straight away.

chuck up a few you like the look of and I'll (and others no doubt) see if i know the area at all.

I don't mean to offend anyone here with my comments, so please don't take it the wrong way, but I'd say the following areas are at the cheaper end of Surrey:

    Addlestone
    Chessington
    Tolworth

I only mention these because these are the areas I've know people move to because it's a bit cheaper.

Miles away from the areas you were originally considering so not sure if it helps?

If you live in Chessington or Tolworth your child could go to school in Kingston? Which has some very good schools.

I live near those areas and it is nice. There are a lot of ameneties near by and has easy access to a large town centre (Kingston) and very quick access by car to central London or even by train.

Have a look at Hampshire too, some areas around Farnham are nice. I work in Frimley Hants, some nice places tucked away around here.
