Skills for my CV you see.

And clearly, if I spent as much time in 'forum land' as you do my judgement might be impaired enough to believe that the local money tree has been more fruitful than normal this year.

Clearly? really? ah that's be the judgy pants again, i'd find some new ones if i were you, they're not very accurate.

It would be even better at £2,522.

But not as good as 15p a week, as I discovered someone was paying in 1980, the rent had been frozen since 1957.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

So why not give up work, get your name on the council housing shortlist and throw yourself into this idyllic lifestyle?

Perhaps it is because not everyone is a lucky as these few seem to be, or perhaps they don't actually consider this lifestyle to be as wonderful as the picture you are painting? With every change of government and every u-turn and whim of any current government, they could have it all taken away from them. The "get on your bikes and find work threats" roll around on a regular basis. These people are playing the hand they've been dealt same as everyone else.

I know I would rather work than take a state handout. I know I would rather take a state handout than starve. I know that not everyone shares my values and I know that I wouldn't be sorry if some people had their state handouts taken away. I also know that none of us really know the situation the people of this village find themselves in so I for one don't feel able to comment on whether they are deserving of their state assistance or not.

This has actually proven the most productive comment, thank you.

So - what is it about Council Housing that you dislike so much Amnesia? I, like many of my generation, were brought up in a council house - with my three sisters and one brother. Like many of my generation, we all went to grammar school, university etc and gained good jobs. In the 1960s, when we married (I was 20, OH 23) we were fortunate to be able to obtain a mortgage from the then LCC, so we did not go onto a council house list - but my sisters did, and stayed in council housing until they'd managed to save deposits & buy their own houses, thereby leaving council houses. My parents were able in the 1960s to buy their council house (under Macmillan, I believe) and they stayed where we'd lived until my mother's death & my father's subsequent move into sheletered accommodation - his accommodation being funded in full by his pension.

At the time council houses were sold in the 1960s, more were built with the proceeds of the earlier sales. When Thatcher came into power in the 1980s and most of the council houses were sold, councils were not allowed to use the revenue from the sale of those houses to build others - therefore the number of council houses decreased dramatically, and only those families who had very few options were granted these houses.

So as you've deleted all your posts apart from the last few defensive ones - what is your point? Do you object to people living in houses with the Parker Morris specifications because your house is not to that standard? Do you object because they own cars? Do you object because they do not work? Because they have children?

I have problems with the fact that there are too many !!!!less families living off the state and accept that something has to be done - and be done quickly - and it's not going to be pleasant but whinging about it does nothing about it!
  • Blimey, Amnesia in all departments/posts now... I smell a rat....

Thank you for your detailed and helpful reply.
I agree, this is my problem, with the "!!!!less families". I do not dislike the people as such... and reading these comments has helped. I think I dislike the system in which it makes it all too easy for the "!!!!less families" to continue leeching.

However, it seems that the communities are spiralling in a viscious circle and I was more intrigued with gaining an understanding of my initial perception (with just one community, not the entire council living population).

I now have problems with the fact that MSE has decided that the word "fe-c-k-less" has to be !!!! out!

Definition of FE-C-K-LESS: "Lacking purpose or vitality; feeble or ineffective. 2. Careless and irresponsible. [Scots !!!!, effect (alteration of effect) + -less.] !!!! less·ly adv."
