If jobs are 'easy' to get in this area, u could have a partial point.., but I think this is hardly likely. Part time jobs are probably all that is available.., its quite common in depressed areas.
As to the car situation, if they are as closely knit as u say.., there is probably a mechanically skilled person or two around, u buy a basically good car for anything up from £250 that needs a repair that would be horrendously expensive in a garage because of the man hours required. (Head gasket is a typical one), that the part actually only costs around £20 to buy but £400 to repair in a garage. U repair it and have a fairly reliable car for as little money as possible. I did it with an X reg car I bought for £300 (saved hard for this money over many months by the way), body in almost perfect condition.
U are far too quick to judge. Perhaps u'd prefer them to have their garden's chopped in half to make things equal with your property? Once long term unemployed, in a long term unemployed environment, it is very difficult to get work. Wales/Welsh Borders is hardly full of prosperity. People there have probably found a way to survive (not necesarily breaking any rules) that u haven't even begun to realise exists because u aren't in the situation. Believe u me.., it isn't as pleasant as the chocolate box picture u portray. Quite frankly, I'd be congratulating them for finding ways to manage, not condemning them lol. And why shouldn't the guy with his own business have a council house? I am almost certain that if he could afford to move, he would.., I doubt he is a millionaire lol. Get off your high horse and look to your own life and lifestyle. Then u might find a way to get the 'dream house' u want so much.
Maybe u should show your post to the people u are 'infiltrating' (why for goodness sake are u 'infiltrating' them lol?).., then u might get a true perspective rather than being as two faced, judgemental and full of the green eyed monster as u are being.0 -
So how can you tell my looking at a car or furniture that someone owns it outright? Perhaps they bought it on finance? (In which case, anything that you owe money on isn't yours until you pay it off!).Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

To answer your question though, most places i've been also have a mixture of old people, young people and children. They also have unemployed people people who work full time and part time and people who are self employed, what does sound different is the masses of community spirit.0

Am I missing something?
I calculate your annual rent at £6,600, with just 2 of you and an income of £30K (gross or net?) you should be able to live fairly comfortably. I would suggest you visit the Debt Free Wannabe board and post a statement of affairs.
BTW some 1997 cars cost more to run than 2007 cars.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -

My property doesn't have a garden, so if we're going to that extreme how about we tarmac over it and add a main road through itJust kidding.
I could show them this post, wouldn't do much harm as my next project lies around 120 miles East... keep an eye on your TV Guide, folks.0 -

Congratulations though on being PC with your Utopian attitudes. You'll get a few thank you's to add to your tally for that. :T
You must be good, to get to know a whole village so well in 8 months that they tell you the ins and outs of their financial situations. Clearly you comre across better in real life than you do in forum land.0 -

This is a very good assumption, one that I made to begin with. However, for the majority I since found out to be false... it's an extra allowance you get if you move more than x amount of miles from your last property (only available through some social/housing associations).
P.s: Good luck for the coming baby0 -

And clearly, if I spent as much time in 'forum land' as you do my judgement might be impaired enough to believe that the local money tree has been more fruitful than normal this year.0 -
