HP Netbook - Connected to wireless = no internet in browser
I'm hoping someone will know whats going on with my netbook. I've got a HP Mini Netbook which runs windows 7 starter and has norton on it (which I cant open at the moment nor get to work). Recently whenever its done an update like a standard microsoft one the browser has hten stopped working, even though its connected. Previously system restore has worked, now it doesnt appear to. The troubleshooter keeps telling me there are no connection problems and its showing up as connected to my wireless so what is going on? Can anyone give me any advice? PLEASE?

Just ruling out wireless for a sec; does a standard Ethernet connection always work fine ??0

also, try temp. i mean, knocking off the wireless encryption and see if that improves matters.0

There have been problems attributed to MS update KB2360131 knocking out browsing capabilities on XP. It says it's for IE8 but I ended up with it on a machine with IE7 and Firefox. After which, neither browser would work. Ended up totally reinstalling XP because of other problems, put on IE8, same update came through without a problem.
I would check your update history and see if you've got that one listed - it also applies to Win 7. If you have, it might be worth removing it. Make a system checkpoint first so you can put things back if it has no effect.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. Normally I use Google Chrome. But I downloaded IE not sure which version to see if it was purely the browser but it wont work in either browser.
Is it possible to stop it from doing an update? Because it seems that it keeps doing an update. How would I go about checking exactly which updates it is doing?
Busenbust you mention the wireless encryption, how do I do that?
I plugged it into a ethernet thing today and it wouldnt work in that either.
P.s you lot are amazing at replying so quickly! Thank you!0 -
try it without norton firewall running, check proxy server in internet explorer, see if you can login to the router interface (the gateway address from ipconfig)!!

To check which updates are there on Windows 7 (not sure about the version on your netbook, but it's probably the same), go to Start, Control Panel and select Windows Update, which is under System and Security if you have the Category view set. Then on the left side, select View update history. You will then get a list of updates applied, look down it for Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 (KB2360131). On my system it went in on 13/10/10, but I don't let it update automatically, so it may have come out a day or two before that.
If you want to try removing it, there is an option at the top of the screen titled Installed updates. If you plan to do that, make sure you create a restore point first!
To control how the system applies updates, select Windows Update from the control panel then the Change settings option. The dropdown under Important updates lets you choose how they are applied. If you select the option to let you choose which updates are installed, you can prevent the one in question from coming back. Although if you don't already have IE8, if you update to that first (even if you don't plan to use it), the update may apply OK. I only had a problem where it applied itself to a machine with XP and IE7 installed, although it was using Firefox.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. In terms of norton it just wont even open, I want to uninstall it and it wont do that either when I go to control pannel. The "Solve PC issues" in the bottom right is telling me its off and needs turning on but it wont turn on/off nothing, just opens a tiny box which has the minimize and X and thats it, no other info.
I have just uninstalled that specific update which went in on the 14/10 it would seem.
Did the restart after uninstalling. Still not working :'(
The Dial Up Connection box keeps popping up no matter how many times I click the X it keeps coming back and I have no idea why!
I just want to cry! I need this netbook to work I have an essay due in in two days! AGH!0 -

Sounds like something is constantly trying to connect. Can you download something like malwarebytes onto another machine, copy it over to the netbook and run a scan, just to check if there's anything obviously nasty there?
Failing that, can you do a system restore back to a time you know it worked ok?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
