If it's price he's on about, I just had a quote this week £26 all in, for tyres similar to the OP 175/65/14, I also bought a single 175/70/13 a couple of years ago for £25.50 - that car was scrapped, I kept the wheels/tyres though because I can use that size on my Corsa aswell as the 175/65/14's just not at the same time on the same axle.

Although i am not a big fan of kwik fit because they are overpriced i still use them for tyres if they are willing to haggle and match a local price and they have what i want in stock.
for example, i was after a Dunlop last week..local tyre fittes wanted £65..but had to wait till next day for delivery and fitting.
I rang Kwik Fit they quoted me £95 on phone, but agreed to match price of local fitters, plus they had what i wanted in stock!

I have done this several times.....also sometimes you can haggle but bluffing with them by saying "sorry but i cant get that tyre cheaper locally, if you willing to price beat/match the business is yours?"...most times the KF managers in this area always do what they can for the business.

My wifes Clio Dci destryed two brand new Continental contacts in less than 15,000 miles, as luck would have it they needed replaced when I was skint so put some Avon ZV3's, grip a lot better than the Conti's.

I wanted to put on Michelins, since a Renault should really only be on Michelins, anything else just isn't right.

But if your budget is streched what can you do, will see how these Avon's go, they definately feel more grippy in the wet, longevity we will have to see.

But we are thinking of putting on some Alloys, like those fitted to the sporty Clios next year, and then we shall plan in advance and put on Michelins all round.

On my car I have used Toyo's for years now, mainly due to the grip level being good, wear not too bad, to get the same performance and grip from a Michelin would need Primacy's, and my wallet isn't that deep as the Toyo's are almost half the price, but not half the tyre.

But then I still have boy racer tendancies, even in a Mondeo TDci, and still value performance over longevity, they also performed admirably in the snow last year, and the year before.

    A £26 tyre in a 175/70/13 or s similar price for a 175/65/14.

These tyre are almost certainly chinese or turkish and crap. Would rather have a well picked secnon hand tyre than some crap costing £26 fitted.

For god's sake these things are all that stops you when you break and all that steers you when you steer, and people think that saving £20 a corner over 20k or 40k is onto a winner.

Totally false economy in my mind, have been to hundreds if not thousands of RTC's over my decade in the Ambulance service in London.

And after everything is done and the scene cleared i still take a quick look at the tyres, sometimes to find out a cause for the crash, do you know what i have found on a large numbers of cars that have not pulled up in time and not made a turn and caused a collision?

Thats right, cheap, mismatched and sometimes worn tyres of a cheap make.

If these tyres where any goo don't you think the Emergency Services would be using them?

The testing that vehicles and even tyre choices are put to before we use them on the road is more involved than some may think, it includes a lot of high speed testing by the Police. the Ambulance service then uses this informaton along with feedback from those on the ground, hence why LAS have gone over to Michelin over the last few years.

I made ATS come out and change a new front tyre on an Ambulance once, the cheeky sods had fitted a Chenshin on a 4 tonne Ambulance, I insited they come out and fit, at the time, a Goodyear, with the Chenshin, the front end was all over the place.

But feel free to use cheap crap tyres, keeps me employed.
