why not contact a debt management agency they will renegotiate your payments lower with all your creditors fora fixed, usually low monthly figure. A mate of mine used one got all payments down from several hundred to about 80 a month. find a reputable one, start another thread: whats the best debt management agency?

Another one that just could'nt read and run.

My heart goes to you, too. Unfortunately i don't have any words of wisdom. But maybe, sometimes you have to accept the inevitable, before its too late, to do anything about it.Maybe you should just accept you have to change your job,and go bankrupt. At least you can start again, and rid yourself of all this feeling. Believe me, i know what its like to lose everything, including your self respect, your inner being, before you really do, hit rock bottom.

I don't mean this post in a negative way. I do wish you well in whatever you decide.. x
Debt free - Is it a state of mind? a state of the Universe? or a state of the bank account?

  • I cant help in terms of your work situation, but I can certainly offer advice, based on my experience. Citizens Advice are amazing, its confidential adivce and they will help you to work out what you afford to pay, as well as help you write letters to all your creidtors reaquesting they take smaller payments. In my experience, if you dont put your head inthe sand, and talk to your creditors, and make regular, smaller payments they will (in the main), be understanding and work with you whilst you get ourself a bit more sorted. The main thing is to talk to them. I've been there, when you're dreading every phone call and letter and its a scary place to be - Citizens Advice really offered me a lifeline and helped me to get things sorted. Do it as soon as you can - I promise the relief you feel will be immense!

As you work for a large employer they may well have an employee assistance scheme which you can contact anonymously.

The reason for your debts (commitments taken out before you had to have a cut in income) doesn't sound like it should concern a financial employer the way, say, gambling debts would. Have you used your overdraft on the work account? If you don't have any debt there I can't see how it would be sensible to have to close the account (not that rules are always sensible) and it would certainly do no harm to ask one of the debt charities.

  • I can't read and run, I am one of those people who says there but for the grace of God go I. I have sat down at around this time of the month (when I get paid) and thought oh !!!! what the hell have I done.

I think even if it is just for you, you should do a statement of affairs. And contact the CAB or go straight to one of the debt charities.

Next thing to investigate, can you take a payment holiday from any of the loans (I can with my Egg one I think?) to free up money to pay back say yous CCs for this month. or before your credit rating is damaged is there an interest free CC to try for ? (postoffice?). Could you ring any of the creditors and ask for a reduced payments schedule for say 3 months? to help you get a handle on things?

I know its boring but what can you sell? Any items laying around the house try for Buy it now on E bay? Even if it is not much it is a start.

I feel for you so much, I am the same age, renting, in debt it can be crap. Whatever you think right this minute, this will change and you will get out of it. You didn't come this far in life without learning a few things my love.

Please post again and let us know your plans.

  • My debts are not all to do with borrowing before a cut in income:o There has been a large amount of stupid spending as well. :o Spending that cannot be justified and has stopped now as I have been skating on very thin ice for a while. I can't remember the last time I had something new or nice. I have just been meeting the minimum payments and working all the hours I can.

I think I will be able to meet all my payments this month, just not on the day they want them. :o

Does anyone know if you can contact the people you owe yourself and ask for a reduction in the amount you pay? Are they likely to agree, what sort of things do they want to know?

Thanks Buffy:A you are right about it being crap.:( My credit rating is already shot to pieces as I have bounced a few things in the last few months and have been turned down for a loan and a card this month so no joy there. This month lots of things are going to start bouncing.

I am just so worried about my job, I am really quite lonely at times and I really do like my job and the people I work with are lovely and I just couldn't bear to lose that. But I think I might have to.
  • I would think if you explain that you will be able to make the payments on a specific day it would be worth ago, I mean if you don't ask you don't get? And what would be the worst thing that could happen? You ring up and say you are sorry you can't make the payment on x but you can on Y. If they say no, well you haven't lost anything and for one month they might let you off the charges.

    xx

I have contacted them myself in the past and creditors have been understanding. I think its when you ignore them, or miss payments that things go wrong and they start hassling you. If you're honest, explain your situtation and work out what you can afford to pay them, and for how long you anticiapte to make reduced payments before you contact them, most will sort something out (again, not an expert, but my own experiencce). Its nerve wracking to do, but once you do it, you'll start to feel more in control of things and the horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach will start to subside!

Basically, give them a realistic plan of what you can pay, and when you can pay it - small, regular payments are better for them than late or no payments.
