Seller won't let us look at house again until we exchanged contracts!

My and my partner aren't too happy. We have quietly let the purchase go through of the house we have an offer on, survey is done, mortgage is in place.

We made one request to go and see it again for the normal measuring up etc. We got told "no, not until we sign the contract"!

I would expect to at, at worst be treated with enough common courtesy to be able to see a house we are giving the vendor £100,000's for for half an hour. It feels highly disrespectful. Secondly it raises some serious alarm bells!

Why do you think she is saying no and what would you do? My partner is all for pulling out with this behaviour...

  • I would directly ask the question why you have been refused and state it is making you reconsider the purchase - in this kind of market it would be a very foolish vendor who refused you a reasonable request to measure up.

    You could just tell the vendor that you will pull out if you cannot get in.
  • I would make it a condition of the sale that you will not exchange contracts until you have a final inspection of the property. The ball will be in their court. If they are standing firm I would do want your partner suggestions, what have they got to hide by granting this request. I would try to get a date as close to completion as you can. Just in case they have taken down the light fittings!!!:D

    At best the Vendor is being foolish in not allowing you to visit due to the inconvenience it causes them.

    At Worst they are hiding something.

    I would do what AMD says, tell the agent that you will not authorise your solicitors to exchange contracts until you have had a final inspection of the property. If this is refused I expect they are hiding something and would walk away

    If you have viewed more than 3 times already I'd probably say no...
    but if you haven't they I would say no exchange until viewed again.

    Thank you for the replies. Its seems the general opinion is that it is not unreasonable.
    I am not keen on pulling out but this refusal might force us to do so. I know its inconvienant and a hassle to keep having viewings . However we are bending over backwards to let our own buyers view our property as much as they request! I think you have to really; so I am shocked at this vendors attitude.
  • How many viewings have you already had ? It can be really inconvenient to have people looking round but if you want to sell a house you have to do it. I think they are wrong not to let you go round to take measurements etc and would certainly be asking why.

    We have had two viewings- one as a intial viewing and one as a second before deciding to put offer in. None since offer was accepted.
