Accountant Kerry, it's only having seen another of your threads that I realised that your daughter is still only 6 months old. Whilst obviously it is good to plan ahead (saving money, looking at what's out there) you can't really know what sort of school will suit any particular child until they are much older e.g. some children are much happier in a very small school, some cope fine in a bigger school, some schools place more emphasis on academic excellence/sports/music than others. Sometimes a small state school might be better for a child than a demanding prep school. A school may be brilliant but if it's not right for YOUR child then it makes no difference whether it's state or private. Also you were wondering whether going to a state primary might hinder her chances of passing entrance exams, but at the moment who can tell whether she is the sort of child suited to an academically selective school? I would say prepare financially now for school fees but keep your options open regarding schools.
  • Thanks JC I totally apprecuate that and at this stage it really is financial planning, however the good schools near me need you to register for the nursery class 18 months in advance, so if effect I have 1 year to register her, I very big on planning ahead, i don;t think i have ever even been on holiday i haven;t booked at least 9 months in advance!! my organisation is a curse! :-)

We were fortunate enough to be in a position to send our two daughters to private schools from very early ages, but I always say to people that once you start with a private education, you've got to be able to see it through to the end of their school days - and that's a frightening committment. By the time our youngest was approaching 6th form, we took the hard decision that we really couldn't afford the private school any longer and put her into a state 6th form college, which she went along with without any complaints.
On her first day in the 6th form, the teacher walked into the classroom and she stood up out of respect as she had been taught. Nobody else stood up and she was a little embarrassed. I was inwardly devastated when she told me, even though we managed to laugh it off. However, both girls are adults now with a university education behind them and no scars from their education, so I suppose it all turned out OK.

My daughter does this and as I went to a really bad comprehensive it makes me laugh. They say "thank you for teaching us" at the end and my response silently is "why? They get paid, it's their job" lol!! My daughter's school only goes to 16 so we'll probably be in the same situation, but to me, it's worth it (doesn't stop teenage hormones though!).
Forever I will sail towards the horizon with you
