a little bit more RAM (memory) always helps too .
another 1/2GB ram really would improve matters.I have
1.00GB Ram Memory
32 bit operating system, intel(R) Celeron(R) system
420@1.60ghz 1.60ghz
It is slow on start up, shutting down and sometimes slow on getting into certain websites such as this one lol0 -

In my opinion this is the main reason Vista got such a bad rep in the first place. Every single company started rolling out computers with 1GB ram and Vista and they just couldn't take it.
its 32 bit, so there's no point going over 3 gigs of RAM, but filling that space up will certainly help more than a new OS will.
As for startup and shutdown speeds, have a look to see if you're running much software in the background. It all adds up, stripping it off can help a great deal.0 -
So I need to get an external hard drive with 1-2 gig of ram?
Now I have to work out how to back up my hard drive lol
Thanks everyone.0 -
I noticed you mentioned a daughter who also wants to upgrade to Windows 7. If your daughter is still at School or at College you can purchase a Win 7 Professional Upgrade disk from Software4Students for £39 or £34 from Pugh Computers.
Note though, the license and Product Key that comes with the Upgrade disk is for installation on ONE computer only. If you want it on two computers legally you'll need to purchase the retail 3 licence version of Win 7 Home Premium - cheapest I could see quickly was £239!!!
Cheaper option will be to buy a student discounted version of Professional for your daughter and an OEM version of Home Premium for your computer. The cost of the Home Premium OEM version is £75. The OEM version would be a clean install rather than an upgrade so would need to reformat your hard disk.
So for a total outlay of a little over £100 plus the cost of a minimum of 1GB of extra RAM, you'll have updated your computers.0 -
