  • I feel your pain MooB. I wish the government would take more care of people with mental health problems. These days, it seems as if you have to be a complete vegetable to get any help.

If you have trouble talking to your doctor, why don't you write something down and take it to them. Just write about how difficult you find things. The troubles you have with work, the troubles you have with everyday life. If they still don't want to help, find a doctor that does. You can do it.

Please print this thread off and take it too the doctor if you struggle to speak. And maybe even write the doctor a letter you can give him/her, if speaking is hard.

That will help them understand how serious this is.

    Update after 2 months.

I claimed ESA in november. It's been slow and disorganized and I've been slow as I have only just replied to their paperwork. I just found out I need to send in a medial certificate. Pretty anxious about my claim being successful.

So I need to see my GP (they are def familiar with me). But they give you 10 mins and you have to rush. I'm getting anxious about this I'm not good at this. If they say How are you? I would respond with "OK".

I've been self harming around 6 days ago... do I use that to try and get the medical certificate if there is a problem like the Dr does not want to give it to me for whatever reason :(

  • I've been in similar position to yourself, I'm social phobic which has led to depression and anxiety attacks - my state of mind wasn't helped by people telling me to pull up my socks and get on with life or family reminding me how ignorant they are by using terms like workshy and scrounger rather than accept my mental health problems exist.

Newspapers and the media are businesses and want to sell papers - demonizing anyone that claims a benefit sells more newspapers - what I am saying is first - ignore/avoid the nasty headlines and remember you are not the reason for government cuts - you don't need to take responsibility/blame for that.

Just remember there are more of us out here that feel just like you do, I'm working on a website to help people with depression and stress get alternative jobs that bear in mind the problems we face hour by hour just fighting off the urge to end it all. Contact me if you want more info :money:

Ask them for an appointment at the end of surgery so that you dont feel rushed. Have you sought advice from the CAB or welfare benefits adviser. You need to do that on Monday and then that will be some of the organisation taken away from you.

You need to ask the doctor for a full mental health assessment and then you will be taken under the auspices of the mental health team. If you are living with your mum and dad then ask one of them to go with you.

This is pointed at you MooB but if this thread turns into a slanging match then it will be closed and deleted.

Thank you for all the comments. It is rather heavy going.

It is much easier for me to communicate like this to complete strangers than it is face to face with a person. I could see my GP again but the difficulty is trying to explain or say some of the things I have written. Trying to say to my GP "I need to claim ESA because..." will be ended with a long pause and I wont think of anything to say. Write it down before you go and if necessary show the Dr what you have written.

People have called me intelligent before. Maths and science in school came fairly easily to me. Need to do well in school to get a better job, right? I have seen job adverts such as: "Cleaner. Duties include scrubbing toilets." But I have no chance of getting it because I do not meet the requirements. I could not even bare to apply for a job like that. But even if I did and get the job too then I would find that really depressing I don't think I could cope with it OK. If I apply but didn't get the job then I take that very badly and use it as evidence for explaining my worthlessness. Even worse than that is this feeling of being less than nothing. My very existence is not welcome. Even by me. I have been to college and also was at uni for 2 years but I am worthless. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to employ me. Even my own parent said "No one is going to want to give you a job. You look awful."

As for needing some "personal responsibility" what do I need to say or do? I already know how much of an awful human being I am and don't doubt the fact that I really let myself know it. I already know I deserve nothing less than physical damage. Maybe I need more than some superficial cuts. I'm just going well over the limit of what I can cope with. In the past, the stress of it all has left me curled up on my bed shaking.

You need to see the Dr. SSee my comments in blue above.

You WILL beat this, but you need to get on the right treatment first.

Monday is a public holiday. Not sure if GP surgeries are usually open then?

  • Just a general point(well more than one) firstly i`m sure many people who feel down in general may feel more so as the new year approaches(for many reasons)but take it from me suicide is not the answer,i know because i tried and failed and am bloody glad i did fail.
As for jobs atm, i had an interesting chat with a friend today whos been job hunting for months, she had her usual meeting at the jc+ this week and they asked her if she came across anyone needing staff to let them know as they had non !!!

I have not gone to CAB or anything. I just came here for advice. I've already applied for ESA now I think they just want to see a Dr sick note at this point. Back in 2009 (I think), I ended up getting interviewed by social services. Asking a lot of questions all to do with depression and suicide. Soon after that I saw a NHS psychiatrist or counsellor. Felt like a complete waste of time and after several appointments I stopped going. But my point is I doubt they will now give me a full mental health assessment if I've already had one and it didn't go anywhere would they?
