Some DVDs (mine, for example) will only replay the DVD-R format. Some will play both this and DVD+R.

    Have a look here http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers
you can search for your model of DVD player and it will tell you what type of media and sometimes what brands work with it.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Do let us all know when you've got it sussed.

BTW, for writing once onto a DVD, it's my understanding that there are basically 2 formats - DVD-R and DVD+R. You mentioned DVD RW above, which suggests that you may be using a DVD that can be used again.

Maybe also worth checking that you are not using DVD+R DL - i.e. dual layer, which is hard to use in practice, although simple in theory.

If all else fails, then why not find a place where you can upload the troublesome file to - and then I'm sure you'll find enough people here that will come up with a wealth of solutions.
  • I still think the problem lies in the non coverting of the PLAY files to a TRUE dvd standard , you need to convert a wmv , or avi , to play on most dvdplayers.Your disk may work on the pc because I suspect they have the extra codecs that are missing from the dvd player that is "standalone".

The best kind of discs for using on "borderline" dvdplayers , meaing those that are fussy with self made discs , are ritek (dark purple) dvd (minus) r.

You can download dvd(iso) images to test off the internet to see what your standalone player can or cannot play , these are burned to a test disk.
  • Think the problem is that the Roxio program I've used isn't the full version and hence doesn't let you burn images (been told that's what I need to do to play on DVD players), downloaded DVD shrink but not having much luck with that either, just gives me an error when I try to drag and drop a file in.
2p off is still 2p off!
  • dvdshrink isnt for making dvds but remaking them , ie copying.

You need to read up on some FREEWARE dvd authoring progs , if not freeware then read up on the sites listed above , doom , afterdawn etc.

Theres a couple of cheap and dirty ones out there in freeware land.

How about a quick visit to https://www.zdnet.com ? Although this now seems to be half the site it once was, you can run a search to find software that does what you want. Although there seems to be much less freeware/shareware than there used to be, most downloads will often work free for a few weeks, or limit the size of file you can convert.

At least you may find something that actually does the job....

  • video files can be nightmares to work with. so many formats and codecs, in all my years of messing about on computers, video stuff is what gives me the most hassle.

someone else mentioned it earlier, and it really will contain all the answers you will ever need - www.videohelp.com
  • I use 'convertxtodvd' which can be found here:

    http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

It converts and burns all sorts of formats to play on dvd players - it is very eady to use and you can create a simple menu at the beginning.

I think that dvdsanta does a similar thing, although I tried it and it kept crashing.
