It did point something very worthwhile out though - if you want to find the perfect dress... Learn how to sew and make your own!

Since I was about 7 it's always been my plan to make my own dress, that way I get EXACTLY what I want and it will fit perfectly. Plus, making your own will cost a LOT less than buying off the peg.

Anyone got a spare groom? I'll need one of those before I can start planning my fifty quid extravaganza.

I read that three times as "Anyone got a spare room" I was very very confused as to why you needed a spare room.... :o

We realised we could get married on our holiday, which was already booked, buy outfits and rings for under £500 on top. Bargain.

  • I actually work in the Wedding Industry and you would be shocked to hear some of the amounts people pay for things just because it is there 'big day'

I'm a wedding planner basically and speak to brides-to-be, grooms-to-be etc ALL DAY.

I think the most outrageous one I heard from a bride recently that she bought a wedding dress for £4500. Not only that, but she decided that she needed a matching veil, which was going to cost her over £2000. I couldn't believe it and almost fell off my chair.

The highest priced wedding I have ever dealt with was approx £39,000.00

A lot of brides, especially the younger ones HAVE to have the best of everything, there are no if's or but's about it. There are so many glossy magazines and fancy websites out there which entice them in and build up their hopes and expectations, that they feel they have to have the most expensive dress, cake, shoes etc - otherwise its not 'special' enough.

But Geeeez some of the stories I could tell!
  • Both my weddings cost me under a £150 quid. My mum made the dress for the first one, a traditional full on and in-yer-face meringue type effort that cost £41.45. Her next-door neighbour made the cake as a wedding present, and future father-in-law bought all the booze for the reception. The photographer was recommended by a friend (but she turned out to be a bit of a mistake, not to mention a blinding alcoholic. The pictures got more bizarre as the day wore on :) ) The guests obviously knew I'd be doing it again even if I didn't, because someone actually stood up at the reception and treated us all to a heartfelt rendition of 'One Day At A Time'. Sweet Jesus... :)

Wedding MKII, and I bought a piece of satin-y stuff for £30 and made a long-sleeved off-the-shoulder top and a pencil skirt, a frilly bridesmaids' dress with puffed sleeves for my little daughter, and two waistcoats for her older brothers. I made and decorated the cake myself, and just had copies made of the photos the guests had taken (obviously no one was in their own, but everyone wound up in each other's). The booze seemed to pretty much take care of itself this time - future father-in-law did bring a non-alcoholic
contribution of his own on the day though, and as a result I can tell you that stoned wedding guests are probably NOT a good idea, but at least they don't seem to sing :)

If those two sorry tales don't send you scurrying off to throw thousands at the nearest wedding planner, nothing will. Looking back though, I don't think I'd have had it any other way :)
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!
  • My friend got married in 1991 ..and her wedding cost £26,000 ...THEN !! Mine cost £2500 , including 8 bridemaids a vintage bus and an all inclusive week in Malta!! I just cant see th point of wasting soooo much money on one day!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

  • We got married in 98 and it cost £7000 for everything, most of the money went on the venue - £3500, we have a huge family. I now wish we had hired a hall and had caterers or arranged something ourselves, that would have halved the cost. We cashed in all our savngs plans and didn't have a single penny left, such a huge mistake and we could have done it cheaper, we were good about everything else, all the outfits cost only £1,000, that included 8 bridesmaids & page boys and the groomsmen - my dress was in the sale £1500 reduce to £200 ;). Had a lovely day though, just wish we hadn't invited Auntie Joan that cost us £30 a head and that 'Auntie Joan' hasn't even spoken to us since! and there have been about 30 of them!
