My neighbour has a beautiful lawn and immaculate flower beds - he doesn't want cats in there. I have 2 ferals who live out most of the time and with my blessing he has a water spray. From the day they first went out, if they looked like they were so much as thinking of going over his fence, he, his wife or one of their children would spray them. I suspect, judging how wet the cats have come in from time to time, they've used a bucket, but that's okay with me too. Three years on and the cats have very seldom strayed into their garden, they're not stupid creatures (people who make dramatic suggestions on forums such as this are far more stupid). Water is perfectly harmless and, for us anyway, the best deterrent. Re getting a dog that would be a pointless exercise, 10's of thousands of folks have both including me, and they live very happily together.
eta my cats did use my garden as a toilet but they have a litter area and use that now.0

Beats me why the queen has not been nicked for all the poo that her swans do.MoneyMission wrote: »... Dog owners are fined if they don't pick up theirs dog's poo from a public pavement. Yup, as I said with regard to the ultrasonic deterrent, the ones round my way also seem to be learning from it and coming back less often.0

Used to garden without gloves on but thats way to revolting to comprehend now. Dog owners are fined if they don't pick up theirs dog's poo from a public pavement. Yet, the cats who live next door but one are allowed onto my property to dig in my garden and leave their faeces wherever they like. Don't know the answer but I'm so chuffed because the lady from next door but one is moving on 2nd November! Bet its just a matter of time before another cat adopts my garden as its loo. Along with the nasty poo issue, cats also catch the frogs from my pond and the birds from the garden. Whilst I know they give great comfort to many people, they also cause great deal of distress to many gardeners and nature lovers. It does annoy me that my garden is allowed to be a cat toilet and hunting ground but that there is nothing I can legally do about it.
Isn't your problem due to irresponsible cat owners though, not cats.
If the cat owners don't provide cat litter then cats will do their business anywhere convenient.
We dislike cats because of their owners.
We use proprietary cat scarers. They don't appear to work for everybody but they seem to work fine for us.It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0

I have been shot down for criticising cats in the past but they make me sooooooooooo angry.
As someone else said, dog owners would be fined if they allowed their pets to foul on other peoples land but cat owners are allowed to let their pets crap wherever they want.
I have in the past, thrown the cat poo as far as I could into the purpetrators garden Had to fling it far enough not to get it in my nextdoor neighbours as it was the cat who lived in the next house along. Anyway, I made a particularly good shot and as it hit their conservatory glass, it broke up and showered their little kitchen herb garden with a good smattering of poo Had to fling it far enough not to get it in my nextdoor neighbours as it was the cat who lived in the next house along. I recently heard about a deterrent which I am trying and it appears to be working extremely well. Basically cats hate human urine (as much as we hate their poo) so if you sprinkle a jug of wee around your boundaries they stay out!!! I do this every few days and haven't seen or heard a cat in my garden since (we have cats everywhere round here but 4 in particular that used to come in my garden).
Not the most pleasant of deterrents but it does work
Hope that helps.Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!
