  • Rang Co Op Bank last week to open Cash Minder account....needless to say, I still havent reeived paperwork, so rang to find out if it had been sent. The person told me it can take 5 -7 working days (I hate that - it drives me nuts) to gets to me. When I asked why, she told me they send by 2nd Class post as they are an 'Ethical Bank'. I naturally asked why does sending something second class make them an 'ethical bank' she couldnt answer and referred me to their website. I asked her if she could explain to me rather than me looking on their website and she became rather shirty to say the least. No wonder people are so fed up with banks........I hate bulls***t!

Can anyone reccommend a good basic bank account that is'nt owned by the people who own black horse.

We could go for the one offered by the debt management company we signed up with.
The secure trust bank. Immune to the we own you loan, take your money thing.

They look ok, got more than some.
But I wanted to know if there is anything bad about them.
If there's a better one that offers a debit visa, please tell me.
Are there any we should avoid, any you have had bad experiences with.
We need to find this new bank fast. Like this week.

I heard of the co op cashminder. But going by this thread, it's not good for some people. It feels a bit off, personally.

We have a excess when I use budget calculater. But we need to seriously overhaul our money and cut spending.

The going over with our current crap bank HSBC, makes me wary of going for no going over banks.
But some of that might actually be cause by the bank itself.

The secure trust bank, it has a monthly management fee, and no charges for bounced debits. But the card is a prepaid mastercard. And we pay the car weekly, by the card. So we might have to put money on to pay it. If it can't be a direct debit. No way we are going back to monthly car payments, hell no!
It's got a cheque cashing service, and some odd charges, but no chequebook. It looks true to it's word about being transparent in charging, in that the site appears to list all charges. And they said itcan be used for online shopping.
The STA, it seems pretty disaster proof. But it's going to require some serious budgeting, constantly. But I don't like that the card is prepaid.
Also does'nt mention joint bank accounts, which we would like.

Thinkmoney, we could try that. But we go over too much, and not being in control makes me uneasy. It works for a friend on benefits. So it must be good. But she probabely has less going out and less debts.
There is also the chance that the people who own loyds and black horse finance own them too.
We can't go to halifax potentially, because they might own black horse.

We need to find one urgently, so please, please, can someone help us. Has anyone got a securetrust account, or had one. What are they like?
Any visa debit accounts that let you make joint accounts? Please, reccomend any you think might work!

    Co op bank? Coventry bs?
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.
  • Hi,
if this is in the wrong area could somebody send it to the right place please?
I was made bankrupt on 31/10/12 and HSBC have frozen my account and said it is unlikely I will be allowed to continue to use it despite the OR asking them too.

Barclays are the only bank who could give me a Basic Cashcard account but they are one of my creditors!
I went in to speak to an advisor who said I could probably get an account but they could not guarentee when my wages were paid in they would not be offset against what I owe them.
I said that would surely be against the terms of Bankruptcy and the OR but they could not offer any reassurances.

Is it likely that Barclays would snaffle the cash even though it is all accounted for living expenses?

I need an account sharpish so quick replies would be great, thanks!

I don't think you can go with a bank where your debts are. What about a pre pay account. That's where I started. Annoying but it's a start.

Or, try Nationwide. Start an application for a flexaccount and during the credit check stage it will say wither approved for full, or Cashcard+ (basic a/c with Visa debit). Saves time wasted in branch or on the phone. And they offer a switching service on the CC+ (no counter service though)

Have you tried Barclays as they're normally pretty good.
  • Opened an account easy enough in Branch with Barclays by disclosing my IVA (Credit history) Only to realise a few days later my debit card and online banking had been revoked. Took me a week to be told that I could only have a cash card and no online access or debit card, although their website suggests otherwise......
  • I used to bank with the co op with a basic account but if you go overdrawn three times then they cancel your account I am now with Nationwide Building Society. Also heard the Co Op are stopping the Basic account
