I have a cashminder Account. However I cannot find anywhere on their website to add my co op membership to claim point / rewards. Is this service only available to people with Full Current Accounts. If so, it is a bit unfair penalising people for being responsible with their money.0

But every Ex bankrupt and people who dont qualify for a decent account through their own fault has a cashminder account can't see how that's penalising someone.0 -
Probably not much help unless you are in NI but at least I have a "good news" story to offer some hope!
I have an account with First Trust, my bankruptcy 3 years ago didn't affect my account at all - in fact they were really helpful, very understanding, they did everything they could to help me through it all. Hubby is with them too, loadsa cash in his but obviously mine is a bit sparse (we married after I was discharged from BR so nothing fishy I promise!) and they treat both of us wonderfully, very personal and helpful service in our local branch.
So there are decent places out there!0 -

My expereince with Natwest is negative. I was charged £6.00 per DAY for going over my overdraft. I am claiming Employment and Support Allowance, my 12 month renewal was up, so i reapplied for ESA. I failed my medical, even though my G.P, Hospital Rheumotogist and my Occupational Health Dr all said i was unfit to work! Anyway, i was given an option to either appeal or go on to Job seekers allowance! I appealed against the desision, they dont tell you that if you appeal you arnt entitled to £109.00 aweek you are entitled to only £77.00 aweek during the assesment phase. The day the DWP stopped my money was on the day i was due to get paid. I had to get intouch with the DWP to start the appeal. I had to call the bank and explain what was happening and that all of my direct debts will not get paid because they were all due on the day i was supposed to be paid! I applied for a crisis loan they loaned me £35.00!!! The bank said that some of my direct debts were paid and unfortunally i will be charge £6.00 A DAY for going over my overdraft, until i put enough money into my account to correct it? What went out, my gas and electric was paid, £50. and £30. where was i going to get £80.00 from to correct me account:huh:?? I thought the government give you so much money and the words on the contract says " this is how much the LAW says you are entitled to live of"????
Are the banks breaking the law:question:??? I think they are. It was so much simplar when you got a giro and cashed your money yrs ago, you knew where you stood with money...but now with all the DD's and banks its very over whelming especially for someone like myself who has Dyslexic, Fibromyalgia and Arthritis.:embarasse:angry::(

It seems that Moneysavingexpert’s information on these accounts is out of date – at least in Barclays Bank’s case. I tried to open a Barclays Cash Card account yesterday and was refused, following a credit check. I have some debts and arrears, being a ‘recession victim’, but have no criminal record for fraud or otherwise and have never been made bankrupt. I have also had a Barclaycard for many years (through necessity, not choice) and always pay on time. Barclays did try to interest me in a ’normal’ account before they processed my application.
I have had a Co-op Cashminder account for three and a half years, with relatively few problems, apart from not everyone being willing to accept the dreaded Electron card. I wanted to open a second basic account to keep finances for something else separate – also, there is no Co-op branch near me. The Barclays advisor announced unhelpfully that ‘everyone qualifies for at least a cash card’, but couldn’t enlighten me as to the exact reason why I didn’t. I can only assume that banks are tightening up on even this type of account. Another reader below said something about legislation changing and a credit check always being performed, so maybe that’s it. If you can’t even open an account to put in and take out your own money, with no overdraft facilities, I’m not sure how people can manage. Thank goodness I opened my Co-op Cashminder account when I did. Perhaps that wouldn’t even be possible nowadays.
One thing I was unhappy about – perhaps someone in the forum can comment – was that they took a photocopy of my passport photo page. When the application fell through I asked them to give it back to me but they refused. They said they were obliged to send it to their Head Office/ Processing Centre for all applications, whether they were successful or not. Does anyone know if this is true? Is this just Barclays’ internal process or is it wider banking policy? I don’t see why this is necessary if I didn’t open an account. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
I was also refused after a credit check from Barclays Bank!!0 -
Barclays knocked me back too for a basic account back in November last year. However a few days later Lloyds TSB accepted me for a full account. Go figure!0
