Why can't she afford to move out?
  • It is costing a lot to live where she is and cannot save enough for a deposit, and a months rent in advance.

She should get the deposit back from her current landlord, and a months rent is about £300.00 could you not lend it to her, the place sounds a complete dump.
  • Yes, I think its time to find a way to get her out of there. Is there anyone that will help .., family/friends? Is there anyone she can stay with on a temporary basis while she saves up deposit etc. Besides being expensive it really can't be healthy. If a student, why didn't she save up another deposit during the long summer hols??????? Staying two years in a place like that seems a bit unusual given how much its costing her.., normally conditions like that would drive a person to find a way, any way to get better accommodation.

I don't know much on this side of things but couldn't environmental health come and view the place and get the landlord to sort the roof.., surely there is legislation to protect people against conditions like this - even if the tenant is only living in a room in a house?

Yes, a tenant can ask the local council environmental health dept to inspect it under their health and safety assessment and if hazards are identified, they can compel a landlord to undertake the repairs and take them to court if they do not. Some landlords prefer to serve notice on the tenant rather than complete expensive repairs though. The Shelter website is a good source of info for how to get repairs done.
  • It's not £75 a week, it's £100 a week with the heating and applicance bills.
Surely £100 could rent something a little better?
