Plus.net LLU -> LLU Migration

I am a Plus.net customer and in July 2006, without prior consultation, my ISP moved me onto their (LLU) 'alternative service prodiver', which appears to be Tiscali. Now, (touch wood) I have always been satisfied with Plus.net's service, but what annoys me is the peak-time useage restrictions which are now in place. When I joined Plus.net, I opted for a completely unlimited service. Yet now, although I am entitled to 20GB of peak-time use per month, restrictions come into effect once I hit 13GB. I now feel I want to move to another ISP, but since Plus.net migrated me to a LLU product, this looks highly problematic.

Any helps, info, experiences or tips would be much appreciated!

  • Hi LB1985,

Don't worry too much - there are non-LLU Providers out there who will accept MACs too.

We do and I'm almost certain that we're not the only ones! I'll try to start making a note where I see ISPs who do so that I can post it.

I kind of suspect that as a retention policy LLU providers are making it appear harder than it actually is to switch.

    Kind regards,
    Samara

I didn't think there was a migration path from LLU to non-LLU... maybe Samara knows something different - although Samara refers to non-LLU which confuses me, since the OP is saying they are on LLU... maybe its just me....

Yes - I am on a LLU product, although I don't necessarily want to move to another (I do understand it may be my only option, though). Other option would be to try and get my ISP to move me back onto a non-LLU product and then move.

If you have been LLUed by Plusnet, you will be on a Tiscali LLU so to migrate keeping the LLU provider you will have to switch to an ISP that uses Tiscali (err that will be Plusnet or possibly Tiscali) not sure how this works in practice.

MAC codes work with BT broadband (AFAIK LLU MAC codes don't exist yet) so it would seem that you have to pay to be converted back to BT, then you can get a MAC code and transfer to another ISP.

If your exchange has more than one LLU provider you might be able to do an LLU swap (I have no knowledge of this).

    Maybe Madasafish have some solutions?
  • Sorry guys - I let this post slip from my radar and I can see that my first post wasn't very clear! Let me clear up the confusion:

There is a trial running now which is testing LLU migration to IPStream. If a provider hasn't signed up to participate in the trial they will not be able to process LLU to IPStream MACs - however there are quite a few ISPs who are participating in the trial which will allow for someone on partial LLU to migrate into an IPStream provider.

Partial LLU is when only your broadband is on LLU and not your phone (the Talk Talk 'free forever' deal is a full LLU where both your phone and your broadband are on LLU).

I'm trying to get other ISPs to let me know if they're trialling or not and compiling a master list.

So far I know that the IPStream arm of Plusnet are participating along with Madasafish, Waitrose and Global.

    Kind regards,
    Samara

  • If migrations from LLU -> IPS are a problem at the moment, could you get back on to a BTW ISP by a cease/provide?

yes - but then there is normally a 4 week gap of no broadband, maybe if your lucky 3 weeks... but still a while!
  • Hi Theo,

You could also do a cease and provide, however I would encourage you to try and migrate if you can. As mrJ pointed out there will be a time where you will be without broadband if you do a cease and reprovide.

Here is my updated list of IPStream broadband providers who will accept LLU MACs:

ISPs who will take LLU MACs
    Plusnet (IPStream) - https://www.plus.net
    Madasafish - https://www.madasafish.com
    Waitrose - https://www.waitrose.com
    Global - https://www.globalnet.co.uk
Enta (they resell their product to other ISPs) - https://www.enta.net
    UKfsn - https://www.ukfsn.org (enta reseller)
    Vivaciti - https://www.vivaciti.com (enta reseller)
    IDnet - https://www.idnet.net
    Namesco - https://www.names.co.uk/
    Zen - https://www.zen.co.uk

I'm sure that there are loads more. I'll keep the list updated if and when I get more info.

Thanks for all the comments so far! Incidentally, I requested the MAC code yesterday around midday, and received it this afternoon. Pretty impressed!
