As far as tax is concerned you will pay the same as if you had these earnings through two different employers on separate payslips, which would be the same as if you had the total earnings all in one job, Tax is decided on total earnings; however many jobs you have.

National insurance is done differently and if you are employed by two different employers you get two allowances, one for each employer. However both of your jobs are with the same employer so you only get one allowance so should be correct paid on one payslip.
  • Hi,

i'm so confused by all this tax stuff!!!

i currently work 37.5 hrs a week and earn £18,577 pa.

I am about to start a second job for about £7 ph, it is very flexible so i can work various hours each week, im hoping for about 10 ish.

Will this mean that i will end up loosing money each month rather than gaining as i dont know whether its worth just sticking to my one job??

    thanks, Marie.

No you won't lose money - but you will find that you pay 20% tax on your entire earnings from your second job, as your tax allowance will be completely taken up by your existing job. Check that your second job is using a tax code of 'BR' (basic rate) to ensure that you are paying the correct amount of tax and don't end up under or over paying (the one used for your current job should be something like 747L).

When you start this 2nd job, they should ask you to complete a P46 form which tells the new employer and HMRC if you have any other jobs and the income and tax already paid this tax year.

Since your 1st job already pays more than the personal allowance (£7475) then the tax code that should be applied for the 2nd job should be = BR
A Tax Code of BR means that you pay the normal 20% tax on all the income from the 2nd job, which is Okay for you.

I cannot answer the NI part of your question, I'm sure other members will resolve that for you.

Provided that your second job has no connection to the first job there will be no NI due on it.
  • Hi, I currently work full time and have joined an agency as my second job.
I do not get regular work through the agency, in fact up until recently they was not able to offer work for 12 months.

However I have recently had a lot of work through the agency where I get paid only when I hand in a time sheet.

I was just wondering if it would make a difference to how much tax I would get deducted If I handed all time sheets in at once or tried to spread them over a longer period?

My full time job is 26k and my agency is paid at £36ph 10hr shift.

I have 8 time sheets in all, I get a deperatime sheet for each day worked

I may not get work through the agency for another 12 months

Hope this makes Sense and that someone can advice me
  • hi
I have 2 jobs and after the first I only have a few grand before the 40% bracket. my question is I am in a company share scheme where the money is taken out before tax so will that mean I have whatever I pay into the scheme is ignored so I can earn more befor I pay the 40% tax?

    Thanks

    Jon

Hi, I'm going to be taking a 6 month unpaid leave from my job. During this time I'll not be entitled to any sick leave and I will not be accuring any annual leave. My tax code is 810L and I my salary comes to approximately £30.000 a year.
During this time off I intend to work in the pub, earning £7 per hour and work unspecified amount of hours ( likely 40 odd hrs a week)

I'm confused about my tax/tax code.....will I get P45 from my current employer? If not will my pub job clasify as a 2nd job (BR tax code @20%?)

    Thanks
    Xyz
