  • Need a bit of help here.
Im currently working 38 hours a week bringing home a whopping £160. I have also started a part time job 15 hours a week earning £7.50 an hour.
How much tax will I have to pay for my second job and if I have to pay extra tax then how do I get it back.

You will be given the code BR which means that all earnings in your 2nd job will be taxed at 20%.

This will be correct as all your tax-free allowances are being used in your main job so unlikely any rebate would be due.
  • Hi i'm currently working 6hrs 45mins a week, not paying tax or ni as i'm signing on at the same time (legitimately!). I've been offered a job for 24hrs a week, but my prospective employer seems to think i will battered by the tax man! anyone got a clue? Also my job centre have said i'm eligible for working tax credits and was wondering if anyone knew whether that would be affected?

    Hello
I am currently working full time earning £12,220. Now if I understand correctly, I pay 22% tax on this income.

Now Im looking to get a second job. Now this will only be a weekend job so it isnt going to be mega money. assuming an hourly rate of the national minimum wage of £5.52 and working 7 hours on saturday and 5 on sunday, I think we would be talking on an annual second income of about £3500. Now is my assumption correct that I would pay 22% tax on this income also?
I dont want to take a second job if all my second income is going to be swallowed up with tax
  • Sounds a bit of a silly question. I'm getting a second job which will push me close to the £40k. To make sure I don't go over into the 40% code, do I just add up the gross income from both jobs at the end of March 09? Then will I automatically get a rebate from the BR code of the 2nd job (if I've paid too much) or do I have to apply for it?

assuming your main job uses your personal allowance i.e. you earn more than £6035 then BR will be your correct tax code for the second job... i.e. you will pay 20% tax... there will be no tax refund.

However if your total income (pay from both jobs and savings income etc) exceed 40,855 then the amount over this should be taxed at 40%. You will need to inform the HMRC after the year end so they can recover the tax owed.

you have an allowance of 6035 tax free and on the remainder you are taxed at 20% plus 11% NI.

if you get a second job then you will be taxed at 20% on the whole amount (tax code BR) but you will not pay any additional NI as your income is too low.
  • Do you pay NI on a BR tax code, if you pay it with your main job?

Can I just say it ****** me off that the more you work, the more you have to give away.
