The pc is slow. i am running windows xp
i'm nor sure what av software i have installed .

Then you may have none, or an expired one-when did you last renew your subscription? Look through your programs list and find out, look under Securty Center in Control Panel. People in the 'don't know' category usually have Norton or McAfee installed....
PS: CCleaner does not charge you to remove anything, you appear to have other malware installed if you are getting that message.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

i seem to have downloaded AVS registry cleaner instead of the first link above. have just downlaoded the CCleaner now and running a scan.
the malware one has all been Quarantined and ran again and there are no infected objects.......the pc is running better this morning.....going to check what security i have now - there is Comodo on computer would that be it ?

Comodo is a firewall, not an AV program I think.
Look for Norton (Symantec), McAfee, AVG.
If you haven't paid a renewal sub in the last 12m, then any 'paid for' AV you have will be useless and out of date anyway (unless it's AVG Free, in which case it's useless regardless...).
If you posted the HJT logfile as suggested above, then we can see what is running and advise properly.

I really do suggest that you post the HJT log first so people can see what is going on. The Norton disk he has is probably just a 30 or 90 days trial-and there are much better free options than Norton.
If you uninstall that over an existing AV program, even an outdated one, you will just make the situation worse.
How do you manage to 'forget' to install any anti-virus?

  • Ew, I'd avoid Norton if I were you. Horribly outdated program. I'd get Avast or Panda Cloud. Both much better, are free and use heuristic scans, which basically means they can detect viruses that haven't yet been identified as such.

i am almost sure i did have Anti virus installed at some stage........it says it has found multiple anti virus systems but they are either turned off or out of date???????????? how can i check if i click on the off it does not go to "on" so think it may be out of date or something
sorry what is the HJT log ?
  • Hijack This log. When you run Hijack This it gives you a log file of what it found. You just need to copy and paste it into your post.
