Hi GFH,
just wondering if you and hubby claim the tax bax on your union subs and GTCE fees? as you can claim back 6 years, some individuals have got a good few hundred. I have a template letter I can send you if you'd like?
hope all goes smoothly with the renovations.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Thankyou pavlov's and good to see you. Thanks we, well I, did that last year when I joined NUT and the rep told me about it.
DH, shame on him, hasn't been in a union for years, but joined before the strike.
So far we have had three kitchen planners out and one plan returned (grr!).
How's you? Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -

A great thing.

wow brill idea, and the dog in the pic is just like mine!!!
well done on the remortgage, well worth it in the long run, and to think we got our mortgage 4 years ago and a fix at 5.59% was a bargain:rotfl::eek:0 -
Sounds like it has been a very productive day. Excellent work with the mortgage and pension stuff. Nice when the same money is working better.0

I've not heard about this before. I've been part of a Union for 4 or 5 years. Do you have any more information you can share?
Subscriptions to recognised unions and professional bodies are tax-deductible. If you fill in a self-assessment form, there is a place where you can list them. If you are just on PAYE with no need for a SA form, then you need to contact your tax office (your last P40 will tell you which one) and ask for a form for reclaiming - or the forms may be available online if you look on the direct.gov website and trawl about a bit. Sorry - it's a few years since I did a backdated one, so I'm not sure where the forms are.
Going forwards, the easiest time to deal with it is when HMRC send you your notice of your tax code for the year. It should list your union sub if you claimed for it last year, but of course they don't know how much it goes up each year. So when your tax code notice arrives, you phone the number and give them the updated figure. They reply with a new tax code notice, and every month you pay a little less tax than you would have otherwise.

Ah, i was aware about professional subscriptions but not unions. I probably pay around £220 a year in fees but I can't find any details on my payslip. I'm aware I can also claim laundry expenses and shoe costs.
I think I will investigate this further today.June 2025 - part 1 - £19,145 part 2 - £21,973 Total - £41,118 29 months to go!0 -
Right clearly I need to learn more about tax and what is/isn't deductible.
As a teacher what can I claim as a tax deductible item. I'm also probably going to tutor from September - can I claim anything extra for this? Thanks in advance guys. We are having a bit of a tight time financially so any help is gratefully received.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25
