The website was due to be closed for a few hours Sunday night. This was informed to people. Its due to maintaince work, but they always say that.

They do, but other banks don't seem to need to close down their websites on a regular basis like Nationwide.

I have done my research and looked at the alternatives - whether I can do better elsewhere, as I do travel a lot.

And I found out that I cannot do any better given my circumstances. I cannot get free or cheaper cash withdrawalls abroad elsewher. I have never had problem with them and their dealings with my account (unlike with NatWest) so i am staying for now. Until someone offers what they used to offer and then I am gone. I also like their ATM machines where you can deposit cheque etc without going to branch - because I work for living so I can't wait queues in the branch.

That is it you see - this is the real life and game of competition. Nationwide knew they can get away with it, because noone else can beat them still - only Santander, if you have mortgage with them and/or pay in £1500. And seriously - Santander??????? With their reputation?

So I am staying, until the competition steals their customers including me, but for that, they have to offer me something better. I am not changing just to spite their face and get into worst deal then I have now.

Halifax Clarity or Post office for payments abroad combined with my M&S card to get cash before going with Nationwide debit card as back up is the way forward for me.

And I might not even bothered with the M&S - I have it already as I use it as my main card, but I've done my calcs and with M&S exchanged rates vs Nationwide exch rates + the fee at one off larger transaction I am not much better off.

Well I will be using my Halifax Clarity Card for withdrawals abroad and pay the amount off within a few days, thus incurring almost no interest and no charges.

    They have certainly changed.

I used to have 3 or more of their products, now I have a 1 and that is simply to retain my membership for a takeover or floatation.

They used to be leaders or competitive on everything, now they are just same or worse then the big 4.

I have also voted with my feet and left Nationwide :j. Got fed up of their double standards, claiming they are building society but behaving like a bad bank.

In fact I would really like to know how much people withdrawing money abroad cost the society compared the HUGE bonuses the directors have received!

    Good bye Nationwide

Yes Because you are in Cumbria. Many people are not living in the NW area.

    There more other players E.G.:
    -Metro Bank
    -Cumberland BS
-Halifax Clarity 1% per month for the interest for cash withdrawal. This could be negated with immediate payment rather than leaving it until the statement month
-Santander Zero 1,5% oper Month for cash withdrawal. his could be negated with immediate payment rather than leaving it until the statement month
Fair FX anywhere only just cost 1.5%. This card is very easy to get even for the person with low crider score and cost nothing.

So there are few of them

COMPARE IT with NW Post November 1st
    2% with NW.

    Other specialist
Sainsbury Creadit card + travel insurance with £5 monthly fee.

If Nationwide had bothered to charge most of its borrowing members a proper mortgage rate they wouldn't have to treat the rest of us as if they were BigBadBank Plc.

Meanwhile their reputation gets trashed bit by bit.

Very true, what bothers me too is the lack of accountability of the board. As mentioned in one of the previous posts they waited until after the AGM to mention that they were planning on introducing these new charges.

As far as I am concerned this is not being open and honest with your members on how you run the society, let alone making them feel they have a say on how the building society runs.

I have moved away from NW to Lloyds not because they have removed the perk of zero commission on foreign exchange but because their interest rates are at best mediocre but more usually cr*p. Lloyds pay me 4% on my current accounts- the NW current account pays no interest and their e-savings account pays 0.45%.
...and which bright spark had the bright idea of launching an internet account that needed separate login details to all other accounts? Should we assume they did not want this new competitive account to be readily available to existing customers?
I cant remember the last time NW paid a genuinely market leading rate on any savings account- it was probably 10 years ago when the e-savings was competitive.
    Proud to be different?
    bah humbug

  • I have been with Nationwide since i heard of the free withdrawals abroad, but im having issues about a new card that i thought was being sent to me.. Which hasnt been ordered. I am not happy.
