See Labours not all bad for big business
Tax credits have opposite effect round here - why work 40 hours min wage when get same for 18 - so loads of people went part time and the employers got hacked off changed all the shift patterns and got a load of eastern europeans to in willing to work longer hours and full time. So people working full time went to part time and now nothing.0 -
My final comment on this subject - the mother of one of my daughters friends reduced her hours so they could get tax credits! Do not agree with this at all - and yes, I actually am ashamed that I need to receive them, and took a lot of persuading before I applied. So heres hoping my girl makes a success of her career and never has the same problems.0

It's not you people are having a go at - everyone has bad luck and some safety net, leg up, support is what the systems designed for it's when people pile in and want everything paid for and all the benefits (cheap housing, free education, higher salary from education) - my standard of living is lower than a lot of 17 year olds who've never worked but have ahd a baby. It's when a whole load of people pile in and take the p&ss - a few people at the edges people can cope with but there seem to be a load of people proud that their doing it and doing it as a lifestyle choice.
I'm sure your daughter will do well, but it's partly your success too, kids with c^&p disinterested parents don't get into vet. school - and I wouldn't resent the teeny-bop moms claiming if they raised their kids to be vets and doctors rather than hang around the local precinct getting pregnant, setting fire to stuff and drinking.
Nottingham is offering the bursary scheme
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/vet/faq.php#financialsupport
and vet/med students can usually get money from the (formally hardship) now more niceley named access, basically justified because higher textbook costs for med/vet, longer terms, clinical years. http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/student-support/ALF.htm
the key phrase is
"The fund provides discretionary financial assistance for students to help them access and remain in higher education - particularly those students who need financial help to meet extra costs "
i.e. it's the discretionary top-up fund and med/vet one of the main targets.
I am an academic and my university does vet. sci. so will probe further. From experience actually quite hard to get people to bother applying.
Edit: That key phrase "extra costs" - you have to tick the boxes, I need money because incurring "extra costs" as terms longer so can't get job for as long, text books (£100 not unheard of - start watching ebay/amazon for reading lists - just in case they turn up, be the first in library) for vet/med expensive (she will use them for life though), extra transmport to go to placements.... money is there to cover such things0 -

People everywhere want to maximise their income. If they can get more by stealing than by working they become burglars or muggers. If they can get more by claiming benefits than by working they keep reproducing. There will never be an end to the benefit culture and production of the underclass unless and until people achieve more by working than by claiming. Quite how you make many thousands of illiterate yobs worth employing is beyond me. It is beyond most people which is why we keep throwing money at them and their feral children and every 15 years or so brings another generation into the cycle.0 -

Disagree - a lot of people have far better morals and pride. There are single mums bring up decent hard working successful kids and some scraping by on a pittence sacrificing for their kids. A lot of people would never steal.Asher wrote:There will never be an end to the benefit culture and production of the underclass unless and until people achieve more by working than by claiming.
True - I just think making working more profitable isn't possible and perhaps scrounging should be made a lot more uncomfortable.Asher wrote:Quite how you make many thousands of illiterate yobs worth employing is beyond me. Starting by not paying them to breed so the cycle doesn't keep pyramiding - amazing they always learn about contraception at child no. 4 round here, no extra benefits...0 -
I dont agree with giving them handouts,
I had it hard at uni, but it was my choice to go. I rented with my now ex-bf, who was earning a pittence, I was full-time at uni and working sat days, mon night tues night and fri night, I got council tax bennefit (my bf wasnt a student) but that worked out to a few quid a month... but it helped.
Having a kid is a huge responsibility, I would love children but right now I dont feel I am in the best position to, I want to have a bit more saved up so I dont need handouts. Accidents do happen, but thats when u need to re-evaluate things... u cant expect every one else to carry the cost of your mistakes... deal with it, maybe as someone earlier did, quit uni.... you can always pick it up again later... too harsh... maybe as some one else said take a gap or industrial year... even take it on part-time whilst working... there are plenty of ways to get extra money, what about doing mystery shops whilst the gf is still able to get about easily? a bit of extra cash, and some free stuff... for minimal effort... they are ways and means.... you just need to want to.... and not go for the easiest route of begging for hand outs.
What really disturbed me, was me workin my bum off, balancing full-time education and work, to see people in the bennefit office demanding more cash when they are covered in gold, designer clothes, modded cars etc... who pays for that?
Also my dad who worked hard all his life was taken ill with severe diziness and could barely get out of bed on some days but the people who examine people who are applying for incapacity bennefit said he was able to work... he appealed etc this went on for 5 years until he saw a neurotherapist who has helped rehabilitate him. But scroungers are sucking up the cash that hard working people pay for and yet when they need a bit of support, they are turned down... is it just me who finds it disgusting?!
Sorry for the rant, my intention is not to upset or offend anyone... but freedom of speech is still around... and GRRRRR this whole thing winds me up!!0 -
NCT sales are fab for getting excellent second hand stuff for babies/children. She can also sell things on when she's finished with them. They will save a fortune over buying things new. Accidents happen. Money matters, especially when you're skint. They do have their whole lives ahead of them for education, though. Whatever the big issues discussed here, having made her choices, I do hope your neighbours really enjoy their precious baby.

Are people STILL posting on this politically-skewed thread, then?
At least, it's a relief to see the discussion has gone well and truly off-topic, not to mention 'off-forum'!0 -
i really feel bad for them. i think that there should be support in place to help them. they are young.
i too was a student and had to pay my own way. but i really do think the government should help these type people out.
i have read a lot of hard nosed comments on this board.
i have to say i was shocked.0
