Celeron D, no expansion slot for graphics card, Combo optical drive...
  • For best results with HD video on an underpowered pc, try KMPlayer or Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. VLC is a good player but it requires a more powerful processor or graphics acceleration. If KMP and MPC-HC won't play the file, then it's unlikely you'll be able to view it properly with your current pc.

Agreed, try MPC-HC in the first instance.

Core AVC 2.0 is a helpful CoDec, but it isn't free.

See how it goes with the player suggested.

Editing info if you don't like the Panasonic software.

I've highlighted the problem. Get yourself along to Crucial and buy some more - at least 1GB.

Already done in post #5. Not much can be done to upgrade that particular machine. Only RAM..
  • I bought the CoreAVC codec for my netbook and it made an appreciable difference, used in conjunction with MPC-HC. The machine is now quite happy with 720p mkv video files whereas previously these could not be watched with any real enjoyment. However, when I tried the same codec with my middle-aged Tosh laptop it failed to render similar files properly and I quickly removed it. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 'try-before-you-buy' option with CoreAVC and my own experience suggests that it doesn't work in all cases.

I used to have an old Compaq laptop with 512MB and HD video was completely beyond it. Don't expect miracles from old kit.
  • I stand corrected. It wasn't on offer when I purchased....
