For best results with HD video on an underpowered pc, try KMPlayer or Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. VLC is a good player but it requires a more powerful processor or graphics acceleration. If KMP and MPC-HC won't play the file, then it's unlikely you'll be able to view it properly with your current pc.0

Agreed, try MPC-HC in the first instance.
Core AVC 2.0 is a helpful CoDec, but it isn't free.
See how it goes with the player suggested.
Editing info if you don't like the Panasonic software.0 -

I bought the CoreAVC codec for my netbook and it made an appreciable difference, used in conjunction with MPC-HC. The machine is now quite happy with 720p mkv video files whereas previously these could not be watched with any real enjoyment. However, when I tried the same codec with my middle-aged Tosh laptop it failed to render similar files properly and I quickly removed it. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 'try-before-you-buy' option with CoreAVC and my own experience suggests that it doesn't work in all cases.
I used to have an old Compaq laptop with 512MB and HD video was completely beyond it. Don't expect miracles from old kit.0 -

I stand corrected. It wasn't on offer when I purchased....0
