But you may find you have no choice but to move if you are not granted the DHP's.
In order to get DHP you may have to proove your ingoings and outgoings to make sure there is absolutly no way you can afford the rent. If you spend your money on drink, going out etc this will be deemed not necessary spending. They will only taken into account council tax, water, electric etc. Not debts either

Definition of Discretionary = not mandatory.

It's not about you out-psyching the local council. Ultimately it's about their budgets, not your will power, and isn't intended as a long-term top-up.

The following info on DHP is from your own council

"The amount we can spend is limited and not everyone who claims a discretionary housing payment will be given assistance...The amount awarded is entirely at the discretion of the council. Each individual case will be considered on its own merits. We will look at the individual circumstances of your claim and will consider the other options available to you before deciding whether to award a discretionary housing payment"

The budget you currently enjoy will be slashed. Where do you prefer - Thamesmead, Catford, Plumstead, Peckham or Croydon?

If you are in a private rental, then it is the landlord who will take you to court under section 8 for rent arrears: and the landlord who will employ baliffs to remove you.

As already said, not paying your rent is deemed as making yourself intentionally homeless and therefore, the council is not obliged to help you by putting you in a B&B.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

    Yes thanks for that

As I said I had previously I received this benefit for a number of years before moving to LHA

That is bound to be the official line

In my experience the reality is when faced with hard decisions the LA's always cough up in the end.

I am not moving especially to Croyden lol :rotfl:

I would not count on past experiences as to what will happen now. It is not a case of the LA cracking, if they do not have the funds available they cannot be given out.

I was in Camden on Sunday - loved Proud bar!
    Gone ... or have I?

Look on the brightside of Croydon - it's got a tram system, only 15 mins by train into central London, close to Gatwick airport, has an Ikea, a streetmarket and good shopping facilities. It's even got a Wetherspoon pub. What more could you want?

It's probably got a high crime rate like Camden, too, so no surprises there, either.

What is YOUR experience of LHA benefit?

Have you ever applied for it?

Dhps are not payable for the life term of a tenancy as the budget is very limited.

I work in an authority and our budget was 12k for the whole year. I have to be carefulwho I award it to and look and income and expenditure in making my decision. If income is more than outgoings, I normally have to deny requests
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.
