So what does your husband stick in the marmalade each morning?

:o have to confess that I'm a double dipper (feels a bit like Jeremy Kyle admitting that on here), but not with marmalade, with jam.:o

My OH also goes ballistic, which I think is unfair because he doesn't like jam anyway so the contents of the jars are none of his business.

However, the flora IS his business, and if you then get jam in the flora............it can end in tears....:(

And what about licking the buttery knife before you stick it in the marmalade??

    Can't believe no-one's suggested that.

(not married to mysparrow btw....I think...)
  • Lol at this thread! :D

I get this with the kids with the Jam. I don't complain. It's only a cheap jar of jam! But I do notice that I have to throw it away often as the butter and crumbs in it actually goes off and goes mouldy. So you've got a majority jar of jam perfectly fine and then all mouldy bits on top. Perhaps that's it? perhaps she's spotting mouldy bits and has to chuck it because of that?!

Yes, I'm with Charlie. The foreign bodies in the form of crumbs and flora are what cause mould in jams and marmalades.

Personally I'm so [STRIKE]tight [/STRIKE] moneysaving that I merely scrape off the top layer of mould and bits and dig in to the good stuff underneath.

My husband hates marmalade (he's from NZ so a bit weird). He wouldn't dare stick anything in the lemon curd though!

Absolutely. It is tried and tested in my household.
No idea what my OH sticks into the marmelade jar because he puts marmelade on my toast before I get to the kitchen.

But as I have marmelade like nearly every day (he doesn't like thinking in the morning so always reaches for the same when preparing my toast) I don't think the marmelade has time to go mouldy before I finish the jar.

There are a number of solutions:

    - Wipe the knife clean on the bread itself after applying said Flora - usually enough to get most of the buttery crumbs off
    - Wipe the knife clean on your sleeve
    - Lick the knife clean
    - Buy a double-ended knife (which would probably mean getting sticky fingers)
    - Go with wifey's suggestion and use two knives
    - Carry on as you are, which may well end in divorce

Another solution may be to get yourselves on a Saga tours tinsle and turkey break to Eastbourne, and each morning fill the pockets of your beige cardigan (the one with the suede inserts) with the individual portion packs of Duerr's Thick Cut marmalade. After breakfast transfer your stash to your suitcase and by the end of your trip you should have enough to get you through to early spring. By that time you'll be ready for another break, so repeat the performance with the spring in Heartbeat country tour. Works for my mother-in-law - she's not bought any condiments or preserves since retiring in 1994:)
