Cat hissing and growling at her kitten. :(

Options
Hi everyone, I'm just looking for some advice and hope someone can help me.

I have a 3 year old cat(Jinky)who gave birth to 2 kittens 15 weeks ago. We kept both until Monday when my brother took the female kitten(Regi), leaving us with the male(Shady). Up until last Thurs/Fri we had no problems at all with them, but then Jinky started growling and hissing at Regi.:( It was quite distressing for the poor wee thing, but as we already knew she was going, we just kept her out of the way. Since Monday when my bro took Regi, Jinky has been horrible to Shady and has been hissing and growling at him whenever he is in sight and has went for him a few times but runs away when I shout at her.

Does anyone have any idea why she's acting like this and whether it's going to be like this forever? I really want to keep Shady, but don't think it's fair on him the way things are at the moment. I'm terrified she'll get at him while I'm at work and kill him.:(

I'm not quite sure why they do it but my cat is currently the same with her 3 kittens (18 weeks old). For the most part she's fine but every now and again she hisses and smacks them.

Just keep them apart when you're out.

Thanks. I've been keeping them apart when I go to work, but I just have visions of Jinky having managed to open doors and get to Shady.:o

Hopefully it'll sort itself out in both our cases!:)
  • Maybe at 15 weeks she's hoping he'll move out and get a family of his own ;)

Has Mum been out at all since giving birth? When my friends cat turned on her kittens it was because she was already pregnant again with another litter.

Hey all. Thanks for the replies.:)

She hasn't been out at all since having the kittens. They were still feeding from her until about 2 weeks ago  and then she went straight on heat, so I was hoping to get her spayed next week.

I'll ask the vet about it when I'm there.:)

Perhaps the kitten reminds her of that big ugly tomcat she met one dark night ... ;)
  • my cat had 6 kittens 5 and a half months ago, and we rehomed three but the family insisted on keeping the other three, i really wish we hadnt because she is so nasty to them, its awful to see her do it i shout and she stops then as soon as they are within clouting distance she does it again!
i know she thinks of them as rivals for her food - which in a way i suppose they are, but i put enough food down for everyone, the day i took the kittens to be spayed/castrated she was soo happy - she thought they'd gone to a new home, and then when they returned all hell broke loose again,
Lily, the mother cat has been spayed too, and has been for sometime, - i'm not helping much am i? :)
but i dont think it will get better, infact as mine are getting on for 6 mths old it seems to have gotten worse, i just try and keep them apart as much as possible
  • I would just treat it as if it were a new kitten that you had brought home. Keep them apart when unsupervised until things calm down and work with the mom to get her to accept the kitten. Whenever he's near to her give her lots of treats and attention. If you can then feed them in the same room, gradually bringing the bowls closer together. If whenever the kitten is around something nice happens to the mom then it should start to make her associate the kitten with good things happening and she should accept being around it more.

This, exactly, except substitute Lily for our Missy. We have kept all 4 kittens, now 17 weeks, and she hates them all. She never hurts them though, just spits/hisses at them, and slaps them when they get too near her. I tell her off and she stops for a while and then just leave them to it.
