It was on the cards from a while back. deanos posted the £10 a month offer, and i'm happy (£10 saving a month). TT will keep the same management structure and the same charges...we'll have to see what we can get out of Dunston when the contract expires in 10 months time. AOL is reliable and i've only had one downtime in the last 9 years, dial-up or BB (only a couple of hours!).

I have just renewed my contract last month with AOL to last for the next 12 months. Will I be able to leave prior to the end of the contract period??? I hope the answer to this is yes as I am not wanting to stay with TalkTalk for one second.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

just come to end of 12months broadband with virgin, no problems at all in that time... however, now need wireless connection to enable 3 of us in the house to access internet. feel out of my depth... had just decided to go to aol as they offer a free wireless router and antivirus software, but now rethinking as it seems to have a bad reputation ...

my problem is 'ease' .... i don't know much about computers, even less about going 'wireless'.... is the general feeling by those in the know that aol should be avoided? can anyone advise a router that i could get cheaply and just stay where i am in my comfort zone? or is that another loaded and difficult question? is a router easy to set up and understand how to use without technical help from the isp? arghhhhh .... i feel so old and unkowledgeable.... any help gratefully received ... please assume no knowledge!!! ta ;)
  • Hi joolsbfd

Wireless can be a bit of challenge to set up. You ideally need somebody who knows what they are doing to pop round and do it for you. I'm never sure if there is anything "free" these days. Maybe you could use a local retailer in the area and buy a wireless router from them and ask if they will set it up for you. It may cost a bit more, but at least you would get a personal service.

The other simpler option, if it is feasible, is to run a wired router to your 3 computers. At least that way, all you need to do is run some software and plug them in.

Where are you based? If it was near to me, I would be happy to come and fix it up for you as part of the service. :)

    I hope this helps.

  • I am with AOl and have never had a problem. They do set their spam filters very high so any time you want to be sure mail gets to you you should enter the details in your address book. Setting up a WIFI with them is very easy and only takes a few minutes per computer. You first of all install the software then as you go through each step it will ask if you want to use this machine wirelessly (not sure if that is a word but anyway) in my case for desktop said "no" but for two lap tops said "yes" you then just have to give your network a name and have a 13 digit (numbers and letters) password that you want to use. That is called the "key" and if you want anyone else to use your network you can give them the key. If you get stuck you can call someone and they will talk you through it but I was OK and am not an expert.

AOL is very easy to use and is much preferred by those new to the internet. Others find it a bit like driving an automatic car - nothing to do and a bit of a bore. Easy to set up WIFI on AOL just use ethernet cable when first installing software on any machine you want it on. If you don't you can get "cut off" briefly which might confuse you if you are not familiar with the process. You do not have to use a key, you can have an unsecured network which more or less sets itself up. If you do that others can use your network and may be able to access your information so I would not recommend it. Install it during office hours so that if you do want to call the helpline someone will be there.
  • When you do sign up with AOL you have to have a master screenname that will never change - it can be anything you want as long as nobody else has it so have a few names and/or variations ready or you will be delayed in opening the account. After that you can have more screen names and you can change or delete them, you can aslo set the parental controls. Cannot think what they are now but something like General (no restrictions) then suitable for 12 and over and so on.

i have been with aol for a long time now but was a bit let down when i went to broadband gold last year as i had great problems in connecting the 3 computers to wireless so we could be online at the same time. I have just cancelled my subscription @ 24.99. they offered me it for 19.99, which i feel is not much discount considering how long i have been with them. the only problem is if i go to another provider is changing all computers to be compatible with new broadband provider and the expense i will have to pay someone to do it for me, as i am absolutely hopeless! can anyone give me any idea of the easiest provider and the cheapest offer. i was offered broadband silver at 9.99 but it means we cant go online at the same time.
    any help would be appreciated
    Just about to give up!
