Bank charges - can't believe what they've charged me!!

Hi guys

Just had a look at my online statement and noticed that I am being charged £49.99 for going overdrawn by £2.36 on 11th October. However, on the 12th I had £134.80 go into my account, so I was overdrawn for 1 day. The charges are

21st Sept - 20 Oct
The charge is based on a Maintenance Charge of £20
Plus a subscription of £12.95

Also, guaranteed card payment fees accrued on account number xxx
11 Oct POS - £0.98
11 Oct POS - £1.38

So, instead of the monthly £12.95 they will be taking £62.95.

Also, they probably knew that the £134.80 would be deposited the next day as it is a monthly child benefit payment.

So bloody peed off with this bank, this isn't the first time I've been charged silly fees for going slightly overdrawn. I suppose there's absolutely nothing I can do about it though!

  • Been looking at Credit Unions - only problem is you can't pay bills from one of their accounts - more's the pity! Would love to boycott ALL the banks and try and get an account whereby you can set up dd's. Unfortunately I'm stuck with the !!!!!!s (banks that is) 'cause I have my mortgage and utility bills to pay. They really do have us by the short and curlies!!

Believe it or not, bank staff don't sit in darkened rooms where they sacrifice chickens and think up wonderful new ways to screw customers.

I think Fiddlestick means that nobody is sitting there looking at your account, realising that a payment might come in, but deciding to charge you anyway out of spite - the process is automated and does not take into account whether a payment 'might' be due the next day. If you don't have enough money in your account, you get charged, so it might be worth arranging an overdraft in case of emergencies. Or some banks offer a service whereby they text you when your balance is getting low, which could help.
  • No need for sarcasm though is there!!

I disagree. Whilst banks are in business to make money and lots of it - they will rip us off regardless of anybodies circumstance or how they affect our lives without a second thought.

Whilst chickens are not involved - bank staff are under orders to sell as much crap as possible that isnt necessarily in the customers interest - and all under the umbrella of glossy and silly adverts where everyone smiles and nods and shakes hands. The only hand shaking going on is behind the scenes with bonuses, commission and league tables blah blah.

I agree with Mrs Skint - where on earth can we go (I mean ordinary people) and secure in the knowledge that we arent being ripped off left right and centre. If someone comes up with that one half the nation will sign up immediately!

Manage your finances so that you don't go overdrawn?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Indeed Mrs S. Problem is there is no alternative to banks and yes, Mrs S - I will be one of the first to sign up should someone come up with something! Any ideas Mrs S x
