Thanks for your advice epninety.I went and got me old oily clothes on to try again today but i'm so knackered from yesterday(my arms feel like dead weights)that i'm going to wait till tomorrow now.
I can see tilting engine to get the angle right makes sense.I sort of tried that yesterday but gave up because jacking the sump up tilted it ever so slightly but then started lifting whole car up from the ramps.Would it help to undo nuts on engine mountings? or is that not a good idea?
Push the engine back at the same time, or get a bit of two by four between the engine and the anti roll bar.
You'll know next time, support the back of the engine, drop the rear gearbox crossmember, and let the box pull it down. Then wedge the engine on the anti roll bar to let you get it back in.aww come on your 99.9% there just tilt it slightly and rotate output shaft (prop end) whilst wiggling the box into place
The output shaft is behind the oil seal, there's no way to get to it. (Unless you put the propshaft back in)0 -
Thats a bit of a blast from the past and I think it is just perseverence that will get you there. A waggling/corkscrew push of the box (if your absolutely sure the clutch is centralised) usually does the trick, but sometimes they just seem to not want to go in, right up until your useless mate has a go and it pops straight in! agh i know your frustration! i spent 5 days getting a ren 5 gt turbo box back on, then a mate keeping company to talk to as he wasnt of any use put his foot on the drivers side wheel moved the drive shaft slightly and pop i went in, i called the car allsorts but the releife was great couldnt take it much longer or spanner through window would of sufficed. those who know a ren 5 turbo is like to strip down knows its a pain in the AR$$. all i can suggest is getting a mate to help wiggle this and that.0

:beer: I cant believe it!! with the back end of the gearbox supported through the hole in floor for gearstick,to raise it.with the engine tilted & me with my legs half way up the garage wall,i finally wiggled & pushed it on!!!
What a relief.Thanks to all for your help,advice & encouragement.Think i'd of given up without it.:T
Just got to put everything back & i'll be on the road again(cue willie nelson).
Just in time for the mot,lol.

Ok, sounds awefully like the classic "fitted the clutch plate in the wrong way round" thread, the friction plate should be clearly marked with an arrow, flywheel side. Get that wrong and you have all the problems you state.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

The first clutch I ever did was on a 7.5T Ford in a field in the rain. That took two days, and access was easy! After that, every one I've done since has got easier, though each has it's own special problems.0 -

The worst one I ever did was a Vauxhall Viva HC 1800. It had a inclined engine and there was just was no room between the cylinder head and the bulkhead to tip the back of the engine down far enough, took me about five days to finally to fit it.
Whereas I could change the clutch in a Cortina MK 3 or MK 4 in a couple of hours.
Mind you the VX had a appetite for clutch cables, always used to carry a spare and got it down to about fifteen minutes to change the cable only.0 -

I found the best position was lying under the car, box on my chest, knees under the crossmember, with the nuts and bolts to hand.
You've just the smell of hypoid to wash off now. That takes a few more days.
