    Hi KolaKube

I also have 6 tins of black eyed beans and I only know one recipe using them and we haven't had it this year:o
:rotfl:My downfall are tinned peeled plum tomatoes. Have at least 20 tins at any one time ...
  • Hi there.

Notice you are having a new kitchen. Me too. Expensive and hard work sorting it out with kids underfoot. I just wanted to say, if you are replacing your big appliances there is a good market in second hand ones in ebay. I just sold my old fridge for £25, and freezer for £46. Better than sending to landfill any old day. I just listed at 99p, said it had to be picked up, and listed any faults like broken drawers, missing things. Helps to neutralise the costs a bit.

Good luck with the work and your challenge. :D

Thanks for the tip cha97michelle. I had read in your thread that you had sold your old fridge on ebay and was impressed by how much you got for it. We are having a 'makeover' rather than a whole new kitchen/appliances but the only thing that is staying are the cupboard carcasses, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine.

I am hoping to replace the fridge/freezer next year either with a steel freestanding one or a integral one and a cupboard to put it in. The runners are broken on the freezer drawers and it does my head in every time I use it:mad: The fitters are putting in the worktop in a way that means I can have this done at a later date and if I bought an integral washer later too I just need a door hanging on the unit it stands in. In the meantime I am going to swap this ff over with the one in my garage which is from when my Mum had a new kitchen put in 2 years ago and is in much better nick than mine.

  • Why do the drawers in freezers always break? Would have thought they had the technology to deal with that these days!

Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D
  • Fair dos. Thought it was worth a quick mention just in case. ;) I'm only replacing my stuff as the in laws were so generous giving us cash to do the kitchen, and the other stuff was too small really now we are a family of 4.

I really have no idea why things are not made to last better. My new fridge is currently in the living room, and i already dented the door as i knocked the ironing board into it, not even that hard.

I am also a bit annoyed with the new freezer as when you pull the drawers out to get to the stuff at the back of them they come off the runners. Then, as they are full and heavy, it is a real pain to get them back on. Poor design if you ask me and a disposable society. I am so glad i can pass on. We started off with second hand stuff from various relatives and it is no different really. I'd have given them away if i'd known someone to benefit.

The problem with your freezer drawers sounds similar to the problem with mine. There is a 1/2 inch lip on the drawer that sits on a ridge in the freezer wall and when I have had them open, with too much stuff in as usual, parts of the lip has snapped off so they now fall off the ridge when pulled out or pushed back in. It's a case of lifting them up a bit and ensuring there is enough lip on either side to support the drawer. It's a right pain.

I have a 5 1/2 month old and two small dogs so the gloss doors I have got can be T cut if they get scratched in the years to come. This is a good idea as I have in the last 2 days smashed a pasta bowl and an empty beer bottle on my floor. Both shattered and went everywhere after hitting my ceramic tiled on top of concrete floor. Another thing I will be so pleased to get rid of. Poor fitters have got to lift the existing floor before they can lay the new slate effect laminate times. I don't envy them that job.

Savings towards first overpayment are standing at £117.73, with £26 in change to be paid into the account this week. I think I have another £1 of 20s to go in too. My overpayments look a bit feeble but every bit helps at the minute when we are on 1 income and a bit of maternity benefit.

My target for the end of November is £41.06 overpayment on mortgage #1 and a savings balance of £300 towards mortgage #2. Maybe a bit more if my cashback becomes payable.

    Things to get done today:
    • Ring V1staprint after 10 as the Christening invites are not what I ordered. Will keep them if they can offer refund of printing not done and a bit of compo or get correct ones sent out today
    • Clear out cupboard under sink ready and pack up ready for kitchen fitters on Thursday
    • Take down and chuck vertical blinds. Take down curtains.
    • Pack up food stuffs and any other stuff not needed
    • Washing and drying
    • Quick hoover around
    • Defrost Shepherds pie for tea
    • Reorganise freezer to get some more stuff in:o
I also need to find somewhere (probably loft) to store the 624 nappies I got for DS at C0stco at the weekend. That should be him sorted for the next 4 months!

I have proposed a change to our spending budget to DH which he seems much happier with. It gves him much more personal spending money but all his entertainment, clothes etc has to come out of this. He likes to have a bit of money in his pocket and I will feel less annoyed if he wants to get something like a CD or McD0nalds as I do now as I feel he is wasting 'our' money. I will get the same, although I can see mine accumulating in my box as I hardly spent the small amount we get now.

One for cup of tea and some porridge and then I really must get my rear into gear.

Quick update - V1staprint gave me a full refund for leaving the back of my invites plain instead of printed with a pattern as ordered! Result!:j:T

Another £3.80 to add to the mortgage#2 savings pot.

I had a bit of a disaster last night. I sliced my finger while cutting the cabbage for tea and ended up at A&E. They debated for a while about wether to give me stitches or not but decided on steri strips instead. I wanted to paint the kitchen ceiling before they fitted the kitchen on thursday but it wont get done now. Its not desperate, I just thought it would be a good time to do it.

I got everything done on my list except the hoovering yesterday so that's a relief. Today I will be doing nowt except reading MSE, looking after DS1 and making something easy for tea. I am not one for sitting down doing nothing so I will have to force myself not to do too much.
