Bush TV problem

Hi all
Well 22 months ago i bought a 26in Bush LCD TV from Argos, on a very cold boxing day that is.
Now last week my TV seemed to suffer a software malfunction, where no matter what i press on the remove except for the power button and menu button all it does is scroll through the different sources the tv can accept, and if that wasnt annoying enough yesterday the source box where you can use the arrow keys to select which source, is now permanently on the screen no matter what i press, and it even starts changing the channel all by itself!
Ive tried different batteries in the remote, ive checked no buttons are pressed in either on remote or the side panel. ive cleaned all the connections and just removed all connections except power and it still does it.
I emailed Argos and they said its past the 1 year and they wont do anything unless i pay for an engineer to look at it and give me a report.
So question is, is argos allowed to say that? and is the fault i have with the tv a report worthy fault? I.E will they give me a report that Argos will look at and say yes this is a fault and the tv needs repairing?

That is the way it is I am afraid, as it is older than 6 months re SoGA Durabilty, Argos are correct in requiring an engineers report to confirm it isn't down to misuse and could be an inherent/manufacturing fault, this will be claimable against Argos if the report is in your favour.
Six months...and counting
"If your claim is about a problem that arises within six months of buying the product, it's up to the retailer to prove that the goods were fit for purpose – or 'as described' – when it sold them. It is also responsible for proving that the problem was caused by you (for example, because you had an accident with the item that damaged it). Beyond six months, it's up to you to prove that the problem was the retailer's.
So you may need to prove that the fault was not down to wear and tear or damage you caused, and that the product (or a component) should have lasted longer than it did. To do this you may need an expert's report, for example from an engineer or mechanic."

you have only said it will not respond to remote requests, what about the buttons on the unit?0

I know this may sound funny and I may also be way off track but many years ago after cleaning around the living room I sprayed furniture polish on the TV and it wouldn't function properly afterwards.
Sometimes it wouldn't even turn on, have you done anything similar recently, like I say just an off chance?
Also have to tried disconnecting from the power for a while, (take the wall plug out) sometimes things like this work as well?0
