Is anyones boyfriends more tight than this?!

Hello,

My boyfriend made me chuckle this weekend. He's notoriously tight when it comes to spending unneccesary cash. (Necessary on the other hand, he's great at).

Its just his definition of necessity made me laugh. He was developing a stinking cold. I was off to buy the Sunday papers and as we'd run out of cold remedies in the medicine box I offered to get him some. He said no thanks. I jokingly said is it because you're too tight to spen money on it? He replied "partly yes, but I reckon my immune system will improve"!!

So I bought him the cold remedies and chuckled to myself when an hour after taking them he said, I feel much better, shall we go out for a walk?!!!

Well he has a point TBH. I also don't jump straight for pharmaceuticals when under the weather, I'm sure you don't need told about the problems with superbugs caused by the overuse of antibiotics!!

Your body can be desensitised by overusing paracetomol etc

Yeh im pretty bad like that. I think taking any form of drugs desensitises*(spell) your body to the effects, my g/f must go through 30 paracetamol a week and she can never shift a headache. I prefer to soldier through and !!!!! about it all the way!!

google rebound headaches.... your body can become used to a drug, so it mimics a headache, you take the meds... catch 22. more common with codeine, but 30 paracetamol a week just for headaches, it might be worth a check up with Dr & opticians, just to make sure nothing is going on. drink more water too, this time of year when central heating goes on gives me chronic headaches, id rather put a cardi on!
Please be nice to all moneysavers!

Big big thanks to Niddy, sorely missed from these boards..best cybersupport ever!!
  • I love a nice thick Sunday paper, but you can read stuff on line for free!

Also there's no cure for a cold - hotwater+honey+lemon is nice and very cheap.

So, yes it could be worse!
  • I am allergic to alot of the cold and flu remedies and get over them just as quickly as my OH who takes boxes of medication to get him through. I find a hug and a mug of hot chocolate makes me feel 100 times better :D

No, not my husband, but me lol, Im very tight, particularly on cold remedies, Id much rather spend a few quid on some extra fruit to eat when I have a cold, and if I have a cough I just sip cold drinks, a pharmacist once told me never to waste my money on cough mixture and to just sip some squash as it would have the same effect. Although I do give DD tixilix when she has a cough, but thats mainly to ease her mind though as she has it in her head that she must have cough mixture to make her cough better, so she just gets minimum amount given.

I know if you take lots of medicines then your body will often begin not to respond to them. However, he only has a about 1 cold a year! He very rarely eats fresh fruit and veg - only when I cook it for him so I fed him up on home made veggie soup which hopefully helps! I always find that eating healthily does work but also a bit of decongestant helps me get through the day.

I know you can read the Sunday papers online but I've worked every Sunday since June and this was the first one where I could light the fire, read the papers and have a snooze - sometimes I think they're worth it!!
  • Ummm how about a compromise. I would never buy the branded cold & flu medicine. I mean some of them are just insane, 4 quid for a few pouches of the stuff!

I only buy cold & flu medicine from the poundshop and it works just the same.

Nice one evil - I only ever buy the supermarket stuff - I think it does pretty much the same job!

You would have been far better buying whiskey and making some hot toddies to help his cold. He would have felt better even if it did not cure his cold!! :D
