possible food poisoning??

Hi guys,

just wondered if someone would be able to give me some advice please,

poped in to morrisons sunday and bought a few bits, including some fresh scotch eggs from the deli counter for the kids (and hubby) to eat in the park (our next stop!)

well, approx 30mins after purchasing them, the kids took there scotch eggs, dd, at this point had consumed approx half, when my hubby announced his was frozen solid in the middle.

immediatly, i rang the store, and the manager told me to pop in tomorrow, and he would refund my money.

today, not 30mins after the school run this morning, the school rang me to say my dd has been violently sick and to collect her.
10 mins later, hubby rang, to say he had "toilet issues".:(

i returned to the store, and told my story. no appology, just an abrupt manager stating that it will be investagated, he took the remains of the scotch eggs, (i have kept a small amount that i have frozen in my freezer, just incase it gets lost) and told me they may need "samples" but the investagation may not take place for a week or two yet??
im hoping the "tummy upsets" will have cleared by then, if thats the case, then the "samples" will show clear. is there anything i can do now, to prove this is a genuine case.

i understand there is a chance it maywell have nothing to do with the frozen scotch egg.....but im very very very suspicious!!

thanks in advance for any replys.

Short of waiting for them to do tests (or conducting your own scientific tests), not a lot.

I hope he remembered the refund

    Hi,
Not able to offer you any advice, but just wanted to say i work on a M's Deli, and our scotch eggs come in pre-packed, refrigerated, so i cant see why it would have been frozen? (unless it was accidentally put in the freezer backup instead if fridge, but in that cases shouldnt be sold?)

i would speak to the local enviromental health tomorrow for advice or the practice nurse at the doctors who may ask for samples anyway, as if it is the scotch eggs you may not be the only ones.

    thanks for replys,
the manager mentioned that it could be possible that the counter may be faulty, or the wagon that they are delivered on (chilled) may have been set to low.

my dd has been very poorly today, mainly with gripe-type tummy pains, and vomiting, but the past few hours shes perked up.

do you think its worth taking my part of the scotch egg, and dd to the docs tomorrow?

i would just speak to the practice nurse first and if she thinks there is anything untoward i'm sure she would escalate it if need be

I would go to the drs, and see if they could support your claim for food poisoning..
After re-reading your post, im thinking that surely for it to be frozen in the middle, means it must have been well and truly frozen (not just left in there for a hour or two) and then put in a fridge to defrost (a.k.a "oh itll be alright, it wont harm anyone etc)...until they were in what looked to be a defrosted state.. (just to add, i'd never do such a thing, but i know the attitudes of some staff, and the pressures on department mangers for wasteage figures etc to be as low as possible, and within targets.)
  • thankyou all for taking the time to reply.

The scoth egg being partially frozen will not give you food poisoning.

There is common misconception that if you eat frozen foods like chicken that it will give you food poisoning. This is only case if not being cooked before being frozen. If frozen after cooking it will be fine.

this is not saying the scotch egg did not give you food poisoning. Just it being "partially frozen" will not be the cause. If anything this will stop pathogenic bacteria from mutlipling.

It will take a few days before the sample to be anyalised properly and the results quanitified. Then the results to be investigated.
this will involve internal investagation and the supplier of the scoth eggs.
The lab is most likely to be independant to morrisons.

Keep the sample in your freezer. If its bad they can send a temperature controlled vechile to pick up the sample. If you take it to your docs it will warm up getting there and at the docs, thus allowing bacteria to mutliply and rendering the test use less.

The fact is has been frozen is a bit odd but actually should reduce the chance of getting food poisoning.

I would go see a doctor, There are a quite few stomach bugs doing the rounds. I know of several people who had the.

May be worth having a word with environment health no so much as to grass Morrison's up but to just give you some extra piece of mind.
