  • I wasn't given an option to accept or reject the call. I checked out the call charges and they are for BT lines so can these calls also be made to Virgin Media lines?

Yes these 0800 reverse type calls can be made to terminate on other service providers lines, and, their charges may be different from BT's.

But, you do have to accept the call before you can be charged. Here are the full terms and conditons:

I got an exactly one minute reverse charge call from my 12 yr old son in France. on a school trip. The cost was £ 10. Lucky thing I didnt keep him talking

    Thanks BT .
(plus several other posts blaming BT)

I don't always like BT, but on this occasion I have to point out that the 0800reverse service is run by a private company and is nothing to do with BT.

...an automated service that allows you to barr the 0800 reverse from your phone for free for a month. u just have to press that option. am so glad - just had 9 calls from them all in less than 10 mins.
Free for a month, as oppose to what? Do they charge for barring your number permanently?

I had a prank call via their service this evening. If I get any more, I'll ask for my number to be blocked, and if that doesn't work, I'll report it to my phone provider or even the police, as I would with any nuisance call.

a few months back my daughter used this service 4 times in a month, I was unaware of the charges as when you answer the call it first says 'you have a call from 'then the person states there name' do you want to accept the call.... IF they do mention the charges at anytime for recieving the call it is after i have said yes... It cost me nearly £12 for the 4 calls...
How can BT justify charging this much for this service?? this service for some could be life or death.... I understand that BT are a buisness and are in it for the profit but does it have to be so high. If this charge was half what it is I would not object to my daughter using it when required. Now what she does is call the number say her name I answer the call and then hang up... BT are losing a lot of money down to pure greed.... not very good buisness sense to me.... (just my opion dont shoot me for it thanks)

At least it was your daughter, imagine getting crank call with it you would be a lot more upset about the cost then.

And I don't think they are BT just another company making a profit.

0800 REVERSE is a Reverse Charge Call service provided by 0800 Reverse Pty Ltd to BT customers.
A Reverse Charge call is paid for by the person receiving the call rather than the one making it.

If you think you're likely to be stuck, how about just keeping a few 20p coins in an inside pocket of your purse/wallet/handbag/jacket for emergency calls from phoneboxes? You'd get to talk for literally hours for the price of a one minute reverse charge call.

The most irritating thing when doing this is 1571 and similar voicemail - the caller gets charged even if the line they're calling is engaged. It's annoying when you're calling from a landline if it costs about 6p for nothing but a right pain when it's just eaten your 40p and you have no other change. So it's better if the people you're calling can switch off 1571 and get a real answerphone. Then, when you ring, only allow it to ring a few times before hanging up - on the second or third time someone will be nearer to the phone to pickup before the answerphone kicks in.

The other option is to carry an emergency PAYG SIM card with a few pounds of credit on it, but this doesn't help if your mobile battery has gone flat. You also have to make a call every 6 months to keep it alive.

Be aware though that they are on to that one. The person making the call might get the message "reverse charge calls cannot be made to this number". Presumably this happens once too many calls like this have been made over a certain time period. That's not to say it might not work again after another time period. However the person making the call might end up without cash and with no way of getting through.

0800 Reverse calls can't be made to cable or VoIP numbers, so you'll get that message.

If you have the service blocked by asking them to, you'll get a slightly different message.

If you try using 0800 Reverse for calling xTelewest landlines you get the message it's not possible to call that number, same with VoIP lines.

This is a do-it-yourself test for paranoia: you know you've got it when you can't think of anything that's your fault.
