Iphone, contract or not?

Options
Going to buy h an iphone for his birthday.
He is currently on o2 simplicity for 10 pounds a mth.

I dont really want a big contract bill each mth as we dont really spend much over the 10 pounds.
Would you recommed a contract iphone or to just buy one so I can pop his sim card into. If i bouht one are there any offers or are all same price?
Also with using simplicity in a straight bought iphone would there be huge bills still to pay each mth, usage costs etc?

Trying to make an educated choice to buy one but feel daft asking stupid questions in the shop.

Thanks

You're unlikely to get a contract iPhone for less that £35 a months for 24 months...

Prices for pagy handset tend to be much the same (as its Apple that sets the price). Just a matter of deciding which model (ie how much memory you'd like).
