Our Story!

Well people, here goes. I think it's about time to tell the world after putting our engagement announcement in the local paper - I am fed up keeping quiet so read on if you want to be bored by our story and our plans!!!!

Since the age of 7 I have been doing my best (which isn't as good as others!) in that good old Scottish winter sport of curling. Although I am not the best of players I love to take part and travel to different places to play, and aswell as playing all over Scotland I have played in Canada and Italy aswell.

In 2008 a good friend of mine invited me to take part in a week long competition, and it was during that week that I met my now DF who was there playing in a different section. He has also been playing for many year but at the opposite end of the country from me. Our paths didn't cross too often that year, but the following year, we played against each other in the first game and from then on friendships were forged.

Being curlers, friendships continue on and off the ice, no matter where in the world you are and the following month we played in the same team for another competition, and he confided then that things weren't well in his marriage and amongst others I became a shoulder to cry on. It was also good for him to have someone so far away, and so detached that could also provide a little legal advice for him (not professional tho!).

Some time later he split up with the wife, and again, along with others, I was always there as a friend when I was needed and we met a couple of times at various competitions and nights out. We were good at giving each other a slap as I had also split with a long term partner.

Anyway, after that we talked a lot on the phone and basically told each other everything about what we were getting up to - and I mean everything. There is no one that knows as much about me as he does, and then in January this year I went away with his team to a comp. Things went from there and in March he invited me to a wedding with him as a friend. I don't know if it was the romance of the day but totally against any of my intentions we went to the wedding as friends and came back as more than that!!!

Since then, everytime I have been days off I have travelled to stay with him, and because we were such good friends before and had such a strong bond, things moved very quickly resulting in him phoning my dad to ask him if he could marry me! I've never ever seen my dad speechless before but he was - before he burst into tears!

As you know, we have the major stumbling block of the ex wife who is convinced that we have been together for longer than we have - I have gladly offered her phone numbers of everyone who knows us for her to ask them how long we have been together but she knows we haven't lied to her in any way so she keeps refusing them).

Anyway, back to us, and our big day.

We went through many ideas of planning our day. Do we want to go abroad, stay in the UK and just sneak off then have a party, etc etc, and then I found out that my local curling rink is licensed to conduct weddings on ice! And that is our plans!

We have the venue booked who are going to put down boards or carpet on top of the ice so that the guests dont fall although we will both be standing directly on the ice when we marry. I have my dress which suits the venue perfectly (I can't find it online or I would show you all!) and everything else, I will be wearing my curling shoes when I wed so that I can slide down the ice (and then changing shoes afterwards).

We are having a curling theme throughout the day, curling brush guard of honour, curling favours, invites, everything! I have even asked if we can have a couple of fun mini games for the curlers during the evening reception and the day after holding a wedding bonspiel where we will play in the same team for the first time as husband and wife! We have even booked a photographer that attends many different functions to do our candid pics although he is insisting that we get someone else for the posed shots, and curling cake toppers are in the process of being made!

Everyone that knows what we are up to thinks it suits us down to the ground and those that know they will be coming are looking forward to it being something different! I have googled it and although I have found somewhere in America that has held a wedding on a skating rink, there doesn't appear to have been ANYWHERE that has held one on a curling rink making it a first, a totally unique event!

I can't wait until my big day, I never ever expected that something like this could come out of a friendship, especially the one that we had. And it just goes to show that long distance CAN work if you want it to!

Love my DF so much!!!!! :smileyhea

Thanks nunnygirl! It's something totally different, just need to make sure the littlest of the flowergirls who wont even be 2 at the time will be nice and cosy!!! It could be chilly but I don't think I'll feel it one bit!

Lovely thick white fur jacket maybe?

I know what you mean, you might not feel it while you're getting married (I'm thinking Phoebe from Friends) but you will afterwards :)

    MrsC....tobe, that sounds AMAZING!! :D

Such an original idea, and so personal to the both of you.

I hope his ex doesn't cause any more issues for the two of you and I am sure that she will eventually fade into the background and you and your fiance will be free to enjoy a lifetime of curling happiness!

Now we just have to wait a year and a bit for the pics!

Yeah nunny, going to get them all furry stole type things, but if the youngest is anything like her big terrorist of a sister is just now she will probably have it off and thrown away before we get in there!!! I can only try!

Either a glass of wine or hot chocolate for coming off the ice I think!

Thanks 4nnabella! I'm hoping to show you all bits and bobs as I'm going, but as usual, nothing comes together until the day itself! Can't tell you all how excited I am!

I know things won't be good when she finds out but she will get over it - I can't help it if the grass isn't as green as she thought tho! hehe

I wish my OH and I had a hobby/skill type thing that we could theme the wedding around. The only thing I'm vaguely good at is poi and I'm not even marginally as good as I'd like to be, so am leaving it to the professionals and having a proper fire poi performer (not that I can spin fire, or would even attempt it in a wedding dress even if I could do it!)

OH's main pastime seems to be playing Fifa on his PS3 so am not even going there... :rotfl:

Oooooh... you could have mulled wine for your off the ice drink. I love mulled wine!!
Or winter Pimms. That's delicious. So is mulled cider actually.
It'd warm you up quickly and make everyone all festive!
